There is a new style of quarterback coming out of the southern California area. The new style can run an offense from under center, take his drops, know where the defense is and deliver a strike downfield. This new kind of gunslinger can direct the offense in the spread capable of picking apart defenses with a fleet of receivers racing into open spaces out of the Shotgun formation. The added benefit with Kaymen Cureton, this particular quarterback will frustrate defensive coordinators all day because he can also beat you with his legs making him a triple-threat offensive playmaker.

Cureton led Los Angeles Senior to a 12-1-1 record in 2015 passing for 3,787 yards with 30 touchdowns hitting 64 percent of his attempts. He also led his team in yards on the ground with 775 off 54 totes with four more scores.

The wide array of abilities Cureton possess has led to 10 scholarship offers coming in from Alabama, Boston College, Hawaii, South Carolina, New Mexico, Colorado State, Nevada, San Diego State, and LSU. With all the new attention, the 6’2”, 205 pound, dual-threat pro-style quarterback has kept his Dec. 9 commitment to San Jose State.

Cureton has continued to impress throughout the 7v7 season and offseason camp circuit attracting even more national recruiting attention. Cureton will have a whole season with his new school, Leuzinger High School, to impress recruiters and a few more camps to show off his big arm, quick legs, and coach-ability.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with Cureton during an unofficial visit, just before heading off for an Oregon State camp to get an overview on his offseason to date.

Interview

Kaymen, which camps have you attended so far?

“I’ve attended the Players of the Future camp. There were 20 D-I schools there. I did well there, especially for my first camp of the summer. I also went to a SDSU (San Diego State), Boise State, and Colorado State camp at El Camino College. I performed well there. My third camp is Oregon State.”

Have you picked up any new interest from the camps?

“I’ve picked up new interest from Boise state. I work out with a guy that knows some of the coaches at Boise State. He said right after the camp the OC, Zak Hill, asked about me specifically. I’ve been told that they will be in touch.”

Have you been on any unofficial visits this offseason?

“I’ve been to San Jose, Cal, Sac State, and Houston Davis. I’m visiting Oregon State and a camping there.”

How did the Cal visit go?

“It went really well. I spoke with Sonny Dykes (head coach) during my visit. They told me where they see me in their system. Coach Dykes sees me more as an athlete. They told me what they liked about my film and me personally. He told me where they were with my potential offer. They want to see more of me this fall before extending offer.”

Cureton throws tight spiral

Sounds like you have a lot of exciting stuff going on with a lot of new interest.

“There is a lot of excitement going on. I’m getting ready for the season and I feel like as the camp season goes along I will get more interest and teams looking my way.”

What all have you been working on during the offseason to get ready for your senior year?

“I’ve been working on my footwork and my release. I’ve been working on staying consistent.”

Have you taken your ACT or SAT yet?

“I take the ACT in July.”

Kaymen, good luck with all the camps and the upcoming ACT. Thanks for your time today.

“Thank you.”
