Until the pen hits the paper on National Signing Day, one of the more highly sought after recruits in the 2017 class will be do-everything Timpview High School athlete Chaz Ah You.

Ah You dazzled collegiate coaches and befuddled opposing Utah high school offenses and defenses earning a four-star ranking as one of the top playmakers in the country over the past two seasons. With Westlake High School in 2014, Ah You played quarterback and safety coming up with 54 tackles and two tackles for a loss on defense and flipped the switch throwing for 1,020 yards with eight scores off 90 of 185 passing. He also picked up another seven touchdowns on the ground racking up 503 yards on the ground.

During the 2015 campaign, Ah You was at it again except lining up at running back and wide receiver on offense but kept ringing bells on defense at safety. The stat line was impressive once again rushing for 167 yards off 25 carries while pulling in 26 passes for 352 yards with four touchdowns. Where the now- 6’2”, 200 pound, talent more than likely will line-up at the next level, safety, was once again his domain. Ah You tracked down 48 ball carriers, posted three sacks, picked off two passes, and broke up another seven pass attempts.

Ah You enters his senior year as one of the more widely recruited players in the nation with 27 offers on the table. A couple of teams will get to see Ah You in person this summer during the one-day college camp circuit while others will have to wait hoping they can persuade the all-around talent to take an official visit to their campus in the fall. Some of the teams to extend offers includes Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame, Missouri, Mississippi State, Duke, BYU, Washington, Wisconsin, Washington State, Utah, and Stanford.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with Ah You (June 22) before possible camp dates with Utah and UCLA getting a rundown on his offseason to date.

Interview

Chaz, which camps have you gone to so far?

“I’ve gone to the All-Poly camp and I might go to the Utah camp and a UCLA camp at the end of the week.”

If you do camp with Utah, what are some of the things you are seeking to learn or see from that time with the coaching staff?

“First off, with the coaches, I want to develop a better relationship if I were to go to school there. I always want to work on perfecting my game. Coach (Morgan) Scalley (defensive coordinator/safeties coach) knows what he is doing.”

What will be your focus at the UCLA camp if you go?

“I just want to go down there. A lot of the other UCLA recruits I have been talking to will be there. I want to go down and develop a relationship with them. With the coaches, I have talked to most of them. I have a strong relationship with my position coach, Coach (Demetrice) Martin. There is nothing new to learn about that.”

Have you been on any visits lately?

“I went to Stanford.”

How did the Stanford visit go?

“It went really well. I was able to talk to Coach (Lance) Anderson (defensive coordinator) and Coach (Duane) Akina. It was good to see those guys.”

How many offers do you have right now?

“I think I have 27. ASU texted my dad with an offer but I have not received it. So I am unsure about that one.”

Which teams are showing interest in you but have not offered you yet?

“I don’t think there are any. I can’t think of any.”

Of the teams that have offered you, are there any pushing harder than the rest?

“Yeah a few. The ones that are always in contact with me are UCLA, Stanford, Oregon, Utah, BYU, Iowa, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State, and Washington.”

Do you have a timeline for when you might release a list of your top schools?

“I’ve been debating on dropping it before the season or not. I probably will drop a Top 10 by the end of July.”

Chaz Ah You finds a hole

How are your offseason workouts going so far?

“I’m getting a lot more explosive on my breaks and driving on the ball with my training. I’m getting a lot stronger too – I’ve gained 15 pounds since last season. The extra weight will help me be a lot more aggressive and allow me to bring the wood a little harder this year.”

Nice. Have you ran a 40-yard dash time this offseason with your new weight?

“No, not officially.”

How are you carrying the new weight?

“I feel like I’m getting used to my weight. My straight away speed is about the same. My first three steps are a lot more explosive.”

Chaz, thanks for your time today and good luck with any camps you may attend coming up.

“Thank you.”
