In any sport, it is all about what an athlete can do when it counts and all the chips are on the table. When fans, players, and/or college recruiters look at Class of 2017 running back Miles Reed, all they should be able to see is the ultimate all-purpose back capable of tearing it up against anyone.

Few teams have had to endure the kind of schedule Centennial High School (Corona, CA) went through during the 2016 season. The Huskies did not back down from any opponent posting an 11-2 record with a one-point loss to IMG Academy (50-49) and a two-point loss to St. John Bosco (49-47). Worth pointing out that MaxPreps currently ranks IMG Academy the No. 3 team in the nation and St. John Bosco the No. 4 team.

While the Huskies are loaded with Division-I talent on both sides of the ball, Reed was a workhorse for the Huskies making the ground game seemingly impossible to stop. The 5-8, 185 pound, speed burner carried the rock 268 times covering 2,198 yards with 34 touchdowns. Class of 2018 four-star quarterback Tanner McKee had plenty of weapons in the passing game but when he looked to Reed, the senior did not disappoint pulling in nine passes for 163 yards with an additional score in 13 games played.

Stats can lie, but Reed’s do not. Reed did not pad his stats against weaker competition but took turns kindly burning everyone. In Week 1 of the season, he blistered Chandler High School, Arizona’s top ranked team and No. 10 ranked squad nationally (MaxPreps), for 302 yards and two touchdowns. The following week, IMG Academy, even with all of their five- and four-star recruits had their troubles slowing him down with Reed picking up 179 yards and three touchdowns. In the opening round of the California playoffs, Reed was taken out of the game early after the Huskies jumped out to a big first half lead before going on to win 55-24. Before getting some rest on the sidelines, Reed turned in a 13 carry, 126 yard game with one score. In the second round, against Chaminade, the Huskies pounded the Eagles 66-35 with Reed rushing 21 times for 215 yards and three touchdowns. In what was easily one of the best California high school football games of the season, Reed hit Bosco for 231 yards on 28 carries with three more touchdowns yet again.

The numbers and productivity scream top D-I talent, but a lack of coverage by other recruiting sites has spilled over to college coaches. Rivals does not even have a rating for Reed – how is that possible? 247Sports does not even have a profile up on Reed – shameful. Only Scout has taken the time to rate Reed giving him three-star status. Seems low, but at least they took the time. There is nothing about Reed that should be holding him back on the recruiting trail except for a lack of national coverage or missing out on a “top player ranking” by an established recruiting site.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with Reed after the Huskies ended their season covering his play on the field during his explosive senior season while getting an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Miles, you ended your high school career with an amazing game rushing 28 times for 231 yards with three touchdowns against St. John Bosco. When you look back on your senior season how will you view it?

“I think we showed what we can do as a team. The ending was not in our favor but people were mesmerized by what we did on the field and what we accomplished.”

How do you look at your senior season and how you performed personally?

“For the most part I did my job. I scored points and got first downs. I did it to the best of my abilities. I can’t be too upset about that.”

How did your game improve this season?

“I think I gained the necessary experience for the next level. I gained a greater football IQ that will help me at the next level.”

Which team was the toughest team you faced this year?

“I think the best team we faced athletically was IMG. They were athletically gifted. Bosco is a really well coached team. They were tough too.”

How did the IMG game make you better?

“I think it toughened me up. I took some shots you would not get against other schools. I learned to stay vertical and not waste time in the hole. Our moto was three yards a carry this year, I tried to maintain that against everyone.”

When will you start your off-season workout plan and what will you work on when you do?

“As of right now trying to recover a little bit, and rest up. When I get back to working out, it will be a lot of core and speed training working on getting that extra burst.”

You have three offers from Hawaii, Montana, and Washington State. Which other schools are showing recruiting interest in you but have not offered you yet?

“I’ve been talking to UCLA, Oregon, U of A (Arizona), and Yale.”

You took an unofficial visit to Arizona State earlier this year, do you have any other visits planned coming up?

“Washington State and Hawaii are set up. I’m not sure on the dates yet.”

Do you have any coaches conducting in-home visits coming up?

“Wednesday Hawaii is coming to visit and Sunday Montana will be here.”

What are you hoping to learn about Hawaii during that in-home visit?

“I’m hoping to learn more about what offense they run and how they would use me if I committed there. I want to learn more about the school, my major, how that will work out. Any little questions I may might have about the school and the program.”

When you take your visit to WSU, what are you excited to learn about then?

“I’m looking forward to meeting the coaches, taking the same route my brother did. I want to see how the whole recruiting process comes back around eight years later. I want to learn the same things he learned and compare the experiences.”

What is your current GPA?

“I have a 3.8 this term and a 3.4 cumulative.”

What is your best score on the ACT or SAT?

“On the SAT I scored a 1020.”

Miles, thanks for your time today and good luck with the in-home visit with Hawaii.

“Thank you.”
