A lot of coaches preach about heart and desire on the gridiron but with varying results. Some players take on the coaches’ mantra while others go about their business bumbling their way from one play to the next without passion. One Class of 2019 that is all heart, talent, and athleticism taking the fight to the opposition anyway he can, a true coaches’ dream, is Jamiel Henning.

One thing no one can doubt about Henning is his toughness and desire. How else would one describe a 5-10, 170 pound, running back that led his team in rushing yards as a sophomore? During the 2016 schedule, Henning rolled past the opposition lacing them up for Buena Park to 885 yards off 85 totes with eight touchdowns scored. His all-purpose abilities were further showcased with 13 passes secured for 127 yards and a score.

The 2017 season saw a move to a new school and a new position. Henning worked his magic with JSerra Catholic shinning at corner. In stats posted through 11 games, Henning racked up 15 solo tackles with a forced fumble and a pick. On offense, Henning was not called upon to do as much against Trinity League competition but still had 174 rush yards with a score. On special teams, his speed and open-field abilities with the ball in his hands were on display with four kicks taken back for 111 yards and two punts returned for two scores.

The recruiting process is just starting to pick up for Henning. Entering into a time of year where camps, combines, and 7v7 action help propel recruits forward, I sat down with the southern California rising talent for a one-on-one covering his junior year and recruiting interests.

Interview

Jamiel, you had a breakout sophomore season leading Buena Park in rushing yards? In 2016, you showcased your talents as a runner, what are the strengths of your game as a tailback?

“The offense helped me, especially the o-line in 2016. Once I get past the o-line, there is no stopping me. My speed is definitely one of my strengths as a runner.”

When you transferred to JSerra, your role changed to a do-everything kind of athlete. Where all did you line up on the field in 2017?

“Running back, slot, receiver, Will linebacker, corner, punt returner, and kick returner.”

Playing corner this year, was that your first season in full-time duty playing the position?

“Yes, sir.”

How did your game get better at corner this season?

“I think it got a lot better. At Buena Park, I did not know how to play corner. I was strictly offense during my sophomore year. My footwork got better throughout this season. I was running stride for stride with receivers. I got better at down and distance knowing what they were going to run. Going over film, I understood what they were going to do and got better at corner throughout the year.”

Between running back and corner, which position do you like best?

“To be honest, I like running back the most, but in the Trinity League I like playing corner.”

It may be too early to know, but where all might we see you on the field next season?

“Running back and in the slot, probably not on defense as much. I think I will be strictly offense and special teams next year.”

Which areas of your game will you work on this offseason?

“My footwork and speed. I’ve focused on my footwork lately. I will work on my route running; my hands are good.”

What are your offseason goals?

“Just to get better overall.”

Are you playing 7v7 ball?

“Yes, sir. I am playing for Premium LA.”

Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?

“Utah, Fresno State, and Colorado.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?

“Yes, sir. I went to Utah for the Arizona State game.”

How did the visit go?

“It was nice. I liked the campus a lot. The winter there, it is hot and cold at the same time. That was weird.”

Are there any schools and/or programs you plan on visiting in 2018?

“I’m planning on visiting Fresno State and Colorado.”

Are you eyeing any combines or college camps yet?

“I’m planning on attending the Nike Opening Regional and a Team U.S.A. camp to try out for the international team.”

Are you playing any other winter or spring varsity sports for JSerra?

“Track and field.”

Which events?

“The 4×1, 200, triple jump and long jump.”

What is your cumulative GPA?

“2.8.”

Have you taken the ACT or SAT yet?

“No. I am taking my first test in February.”

Last question, for fun. Do you have a favorite Christmas tradition or Christmas movie that you have to do or watch every year or the holiday just isn’t the same?

“I like watching Home Alone. Our family exchanges presents, that is my favorite tradition on Christmas.”

Jamiel, thanks for your time today and good luck with your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
