All defensive coordinators at every level want key players on their squad that will help shutdown the opposition. In the trenches, a DC wants a guy who can rush the quarterback off the edge and a guy that can fill the gaps stopping the run. In the box, the stud inside linebacker that can clean up on running backs is ideal. In the secondary, a cover corner that can lockdown the opposition’s top receiver taking away one side of the field is a desire to get but not often granted. The Charlotte 49ers appear to have found their rare breed corner in Class of 2019 Oklahoma talent Kamron Love.

Love had a breakthrough season for Santa Fe High School in 2017 coming up with 58 tackles, 31 solo, and two tackles for a loss. Perhaps most importantly, the 6-0, 160-pound, defender had four interceptions and defended six passes. For the work turned in, Love was seemingly all-everything receiving All-State, All-Conference, and All-City honors while taking home the Conference Defensive Back of the Year award.

College coaches traveling to Oklahoma to scout prospects keyed in on Love. Ahead of his senior season, Love had 13 offers to choose from picking Charlotte over Army, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, East Central University, Central Oklahoma, Indiana State, Northeast State, Northwestern Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Baptist, Howard, and Navy.

To learn more about how the 49ers became Love’s ideal fit, I sat down for a quick one-on-one interview gaining insight on his recruiting process with a look ahead to the 2018 season.

Interview

Kamron, congratulations on your commitment to Charlotte.

“Thank you.”

I want to talk to you about the upcoming season, but first, if you will, tell me how the recruiting process between you and the 49ers staff went from interest, to offer, to commitment.

“At first, I knew Coach (Glenn) Spencer (defensive coordinator) from Oklahoma State. He left OSU and went to Charlotte, but he continued to recruit me. They offered me, and then I went out there. I loved the campus, it was amazing. Charlotte felt like the place for me.”

When did you know and what influenced you that Charlotte was the right school and football program for you?

“When we went down there and visited, I loved it and my parents loved it. They loved the coaches like I did. Like I said, it felt like home.”

When did you verbally commit to the 49ers and which coach got that call?

“Coach Spencer got the first call. After him, I talked to Coach (Brad) Lambert, the head coach.”

What was Coach Spencer’s reaction when you committed?

“He said that is great. Then he let me get on the phone with the head coach, Coach Lambert, so he could hear my commitment. They were excited like I was.”

What were you thinking and/or feeling right before you made the call?

“I was thinking, this is a big part of my life. This is where I am spending the next four years of my life to set me up for the rest of my life. I was ready for it.”

How will the staff use you within their defensive scheme?

“At corner. If they need me at safety, I will play that as well.”

How does it feel to have a dream of yours become a reality?

“It feels amazing. It is hard to put into words. To see it come true, it is a great feeling.”

Have you set your official visit with the 49ers yet?

“No. I have not set my official with them yet.”

When did you actually commit to Charlotte?

“I committed on Thursday and I announced it on Sunday.”

Was there a reason for the delay?

“No. I let it set in for me and my family before I let it be known on Sunday.”

Let’s shift to the upcoming season. How did your offseason workouts go?

“They went well. We, as a team, we got a lot better. We got closer as a team overall working into the fall season. We had some scrimmages, we looked good. We are ready for a great season.”

Where are you seeing the biggest improvements in your skillset during fall camp?

“My hips have gotten better. They were not terrible, but they have gotten better. I have better footwork than I did last season.”

Where all will you line up on the field this year?

“I am playing receiver, defensive back, and most of the special teams but primarily at kick and punt returner.”

The Wolves open on the road with Edmond North, what kind of game are you expecting from them on Friday?

“They are a crosstown rival; there will be some fight in this game. I don’t think they are ready for us.”

What goals have you set for your senior year?

“For defense, I want to be All-State, All-Conference, and All-City again with at least 10 interceptions. On offense, I want 40 to 50 catches for at least 800 yards and 10 touchdowns.”

Kamron, I hope you achieve all your goals this season. Thanks for your time today and congrats, again, on your commitment.

“Thank you.”
