If one has to transfer schools, Class of 2021 athlete Joshua Lorick finds himself in the best of a unique situation going from one championship winning squad to another. Lorick (6-0, 162) was a backup receiver for the California title winning and national championship earning Mater Dei Monarchs during the 2018 season. His new squad, Adelanto High School knows a thing or two about hanging banners as well capturing a Division 13 title this past season after downing Orange Vista 20-15. Lorick is in process of transferring to his new school, an opportunity that will allow him to be a two-way standout at both receiver and at corner.

In an RNG catch-up interview, I sat down with Lorick getting the inside scoop on the move and his offseason workouts.

Interview

Josh, the Monarchs have been atop the high school football world over the past two seasons. How difficult were the practices day to day?

“The practices were different. At Mater Dei, we started with warmups and then went straight into special teams. After that, we did one-on-ones with our group and then into team work. Mater Dei’s practices, were challenging. I am excited about practicing with my new team. It will be a big change, but I know they have some guys with D-I offers on the roster. It will still be a challenge inpractice.”

How did your game grow last season in the Mater Dei practices going against your five-, four-, and three-star teammates?

“It helped me a lot. I was going against Elias Ricks and those guys, they are top D-I prospects. They pushed me to get better. They helped me with my get off and they explained to me what I was doing right and wrong. They shared with me what I should work on with my routes. The showed me with my speed how to get separation. They were great mentors to me.”

What are you working on with your game this offseason?

“This offseason, I will be on the Jug machine all the time. I am working on my press releases, creating separation, and my speed. I am also working on jump balls and the timing of going up and getting the ball.”

You kind of touched on this a minute ago, what has you excited about the transfer?

“I am excited about being able to come home to be with my family. That was the big reason for the transfer. I am excited about being able to workout with my brother. Being home and with friends and family has me excited. It will be a blessing. “

When we last caught up we were at a Ground Zero 7v7 event, are you still going to play with Ground Zero this spring?

“For sure. I will keep playing 7v7 with Ground Zero.”

How is playing with Ground Zero helping you this offseason?

“They are helping me a lot. They are helping me at corner a lot. They have helped me with my stance, my back pedal, and getting out of my breaks. They are teaching me how to stay square and on the hip without opening up too fast.”

Have you attended any national camps yet?

“Yes. I just competed at the Adidas Three-Stripe Camp.”

Do you have any other upcoming camps you may attend?

“I might be going to the Nike Opening Regional in Oakland.”

Going into recruiting, which schools are showing interest?

“I am receiving interest from UNLV, they have been in contact, Washington, and Fresno State.”

Last question. What personal goals have you set for yourself this offseason?

“My goal is to be more patient with myself and not worry about recruiting. I am staying focused on my grades and working hard on my game. I am setting aside all the negative stuff and thinking positive. I am staying close to God and staying happy.”

All very good goals. Josh, it was great catching up with you today. I hope the transfer is a great one for you.

“Thank you.”
