Catching up with Canadian WR Nick DeLuca

Exclusive interview with Nick DeLuca

When I last sat down for a one-on-one interview with Hamilton, Ontario wide receiver Nick DeLuca he had taken a break from a rigorous west coast swing through the U.S. that included stops at Cal, University of Washington, and UCLA, all after hitting up Duke, Iowa, and Cornell.

Not surprisingly DeLuca was not finished making a name for himself among American college football coaches with another stop at Minnesota’s camp. True to form the budding Canadian talent grabbed the attention of Golden Gophers wide receivers coach Brian Anderson and tight ends coach Rob Reeves.

DeLuca has the size, 6’0”, 190 pounds, hands, and the speed, laser timed 4.48 forty-yard dash, now all he needs is the approval of at least one college recruiter. Due to the perceived lack of overall talent in Canadian high school football American coaches are taking a second and third look at DeLuca, a process the Canada Prep High School player is welcoming.

The updated rundown on which teams are in hot pursuit of DeLuca

Cal – Canada Prep’s head coach is none other than former all-time Golden Bears great wide receiver Geoff McArthur. Cal’s coaching staff acknowledged that Nick was a standout at their camp. The connection between McArthur and the Cal coaching staff is expected to remain open as the season progresses.

Buffalo – A meet and greet with Nick and members of the Buffalo staff is scheduled during the fall.

Fordham – Coaching staff has inquired about Nick’s standardized test scores leading one to believe further contact is upcoming.

Eastern Washington – Liked Nick’s performance at the Northeast Camp, further evaluation upcoming.

Iowa – Hawkeyes wide receiver coach Bobby Kennedy is expected to attend a couple of games during the course of the season and wants reel after Nick’s first three or four games.

Minnesota – Coach Reeves and Coach Anderson might attend Nick’s game against Lowell High School (Michigan) on August 29. Both have asked for game film after Nick’s first three or four games of the 2014 season.

Cornell – Has tagged Nick as a “Top Guy” asking him to begin the recruiting process. Part of the process has included asking for competition of entry applications and a school entry essay.
