The spring is always a great time to find the next rising underclassman star in high school football. With camps and 7v7 season going on, the players taking their licks in practice during the regular season with limited field time in games now get to showcase what they have learned and how far their skillset has come forward. This was the case for RNG seeing Chino Hills 2021 quarterback Matthew Geeting. After playing behind an upperclassman in 2018, Geeting was able to take control of the Huskies (6-5) offense this year so far passing for 2,396 yards with 26 touchdowns on 194 completions with just eight interceptions in 331 pass attempts.

The 6-5, 200-pound, strong-armed QB has already taken unofficial visits to Nevada, San Jose State, UC-Davis, Sacramento State, Dixie State, and Arizona with an upcoming trip planned to San Diego State. To learn how his game has come along from the spring months at camps to applying that against Division IV California squads, I sat down for an update interview with Mr. Geeting.

Interview

Matthew, the 2019 season has been a breakout year for you – I could see it coming in the spring. In your words, how did the regular season go for you personally?

“It went great. I had a lot of time to grow and develop, this has been my first year starting. It has been a great year. I got to grow and lead my team.”

With the experience, your mental understanding of the game had to expand by leaps and bounds. What are some of the key things you have learned on the field that has helped you improve your overall game?

“It is more about preparation. It has been more mentally watching film and knowing how the defense would react to our plays, that part of my game grew greatly from last year. In-game, it is not as you always see it on film. When I see stuff in games that is different than on film, I talk to my coach and we figure it out so we can move the ball.”

From your film, you did a great job of spreading the ball around in the offense with five players pulling in 21 or more passes. How did you work the chemistry with those guys, even into the schedule, to be so productive on the field?

“I have been with those guys nearly all my life. Some of them I have played with winning Pop Warner Super Bowls as kids. Growing up together and knowing each person’s strength and putting them into position to make plays has been the key on the field.”

Which areas of your game really pushed ahead in 2019?

“My presence in the pocket; that has grown a lot. I am moving up in the pocket avoiding sacks. I have not been sacked once in the last seven games. I have a great offensive line. I am getting the ball out quick to not be in that spot giving up a sack.”

Of the games played, which has been your best this season?

“My last game, against Mayfair. I played well and as a team we played great.”

Another feather in the cap moment for your high school career came on Friday when you notched your first playoff victory taking down Mayfair 42-12. You touched on this briefly a minute ago, but going in-depth, how did the game go for you?

“It went really well. We prepared well. We knew we had a great team that can make a great playoff run. If we keep doing what we are doing we will be fine. I felt like I was able to attack the field where they were not. We are good at spotting what they were not doing well and attacked that.”

It is early in the preparation process, but what are you expecting from Culver City’s (11-0) defense this Friday?

“They will be fast and good, honestly. But I think we have a good shot to make a deep run into the playoffs.”

Matthew, it was great catching up with you today. Good luck the rest of the way in the playoffs.

“Thank you.”
