Watching Xavier Prep High School play during the 2017 season, it did not take long to spot Fabrice Voyne on the field. The 6-2, 195-pound, athlete was all over the gridiron lining up at receiver and corner for the Saints proving to be a MVP caliber player on the field. Voyne made the most out of his opportunities during his junior campaign and is set to improve upon all that he does with an even bigger impact for the Saints during his senior season.

Voyne worked his way to under the radar three-star status a year ago after compiling an estimated stat line of 30 receptions for 600-plus yards with five touchdowns along with 13 carries for 51 yards with another score going up on the board in nine games. On defense, Voyne had 29 tackles, a tackle for a loss, blocked a field and a punt adding to his all-around athlete resume. When the 2018 season kicks off, Voyne will once again torture opposing California defenses playing receiver, but he will have an even bigger impact on defense lining up at free safety.

Being that big safety head-hunting across the field should help improve his recruiting stock with college coaches. Voyne already has offers from BYU, Brown, UC-Davis, and Utah State with UCLA, Stanford, Utah, and Harvard, among others, showing interest. A closer look at Voyne will show he is a true athlete with 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash and a true student in the classroom carrying a 4.1 GPA with a 1290 scored on the SAT.

In a preseason RNG exclusive interview, I sat down with Voyne covering his offseason workouts and recruiting process while getting his thoughts on the approaching 2018 season.

Interview

Fabrice, your speed jumps off your game reel from your junior year, how fast are you?

“My 100 meter is a 10.9. In my first 10 yards, that is where I make my money, as they say. Especially at corner, my start speed pays off. My 10-yard split is fast. My best 40-yard dash time is a 4.5.”

Nice. Which events do you compete with track?

“My events are the 100, 200, and 4×1.”

You do a great job of high-pointing the ball and going up and getting 50-50 balls. What is your best vertical leap?

“35.3-inches.”

How has fall camp with the Saints gone so far?

“Great. We are gelling as a team. This one of the first times in school history, where we have a lot of confidence going into the season. Our coaches are doing a great job getting us ready for the season. Every player is ready and excited. We are going to be the aggressors this year. We have that confidence we have not had in a while.”

Where all will you play on the field in 2018?

“Free safety, I love playing free safety; that is fun. I love coming downhill with speed and smacking dudes. I love covering deep as a safety. On offense, I will be at receiver and on special teams I am returning punts.”

You spoke highly about free safety, do you have a favorite position, or do you like playing them all?

“Free safety. I love playing corner, but free safety is my favorite.”

With all that you do, how did you tackle your offseason workouts? What were the important things for you to focus on with your work?

“I am always hitting the weight room, that is important part of my game. I, of course, did a lot of field work and worked on my nutrition. I am always hydrated and get good sleep and good rest to stay injury free. I worked a lot on my footwork and explosive movements this offseason.”

Did you put your skills to the test at any camps this offseason?

“Over the summer, no, but I did go to some combine camps like Rivals and the Nike Opening Regional. During the spring, I played 7v7 ball with Ford Sports Performance out of Washington; my dad knows their coach. I think we were ranked No. 13 in the nation this spring. At the Rivals, Opening Regional, and during the 7v7 season, I got to play against all the top players in the nation.”

Going into the season, which schools are showing recruiting interest in you but have not offered yet?

“Harvard – they are showing a lot of interest and asking me for an official visit, Washington State – I have been taking to them, Wyoming, Stanford, UCLA, and Utah as well. A lot of schools want to see my first three games this year before they offer.”

Which schools have offered you?

“BYU, Brown, UC-Davis, and Utah State.”

Did you get to take any unofficial visits during the offseason?

“Yes. At the end of July, I went to Utah, Utah State, and BYU. With my 7v7 team, I visited UCLA and USC. I also visited Fresno State during my junior season.”

Do you have any visits planned yet for this fall?

“I have not set my officials yet. I am going to play the season out. I plan to take all five of my official visits.”

Turning to the season. The Saints open against Notre Dame (Riverside) on the road, what kind of challenge will that game present you and the Saints?

“I think it will be a mental challenge most of all. We have the physical ability to beat everyone on our schedule. We have to get past our tradition, I don’t know if we’ve had a winning season yet because we are such a young school. We’ve had low numbers in football in the past, but I believe we can win this year. We had a great scrimmage the other day, everything went really well. We will show them what is up this year.”

What other games are you excited for this season?

“Every game, honestly. We want to win every game. All of them are equally important.”

What goals have you set for your senior year?

“To be a leader on the field and to encourage my guys as much as possible. I have the most varsity experience having played varsity since my freshman year. It does not matter who is in the stands, it is us on the field, and that is what should be most important to us this season.”

Fabrice, I appreciate your time today and I look forward to seeing how the 2018 season plays out for you.

“Thank you.”
