If you thought Denzel Washington was a “Man on Fire” in his 2004 blockbuster hit movie, just wait until you see Class of 2019 quarterback Ezekiel Savage over the next five games of the regular season. After sitting out the mandatory five games due to CIF transfer rules, Savage is ready to storm the field to prove what he can do with his new team at Reseda High School.

Savage is that prototypical dual-threat quarterback with size (6-3, 215), speed, and an arm to match making him a dangerous weapon in the spread and pro-style offenses. During his junior campaign, he threw for 2,642 yards with 27 touchdowns and moved Royal High School down the field another 266 yards with his legs posting four more scores on the board in 11 games played. In 2018, the Regents have posted a 5-0 record to start the season against Division-I competition and are 1-0 in Valley Mission League play seeking a perfect season with a league title.

San Fernando High School will take the blunt force of Savage’s will come Friday in his return to the gridiron. With Ivy League, Mountain West, and Pac-12 schools showing keen interest in Savage’s next five games, I sat down for a quick one-on-one for insight on his game and recruiting process.

Interview

Ezekiel, the moment has finally come for you to take the field during your senior year with Reseda. What will it be like for you walking out there for the first series on offense?

“There will be a lot of energy. These five weeks sitting out, that has built up a lot of anticipation. I am excited about going out there with a new team, my new family.”

What has practice been like this week for you, what has been your focus?

“We’ve been going back over the plays. Nothing has really changed in the offense from Dranel Rhodes to me. We may have some more open plays in the offense, but everything will basically be the same.”

I know this is a big game for the Regents and for the Tigers (2-2), what kind of game can the fans expect?

“I believe they can expect a tough one, a DeShawn Watson verses Alabama kind of game with Reseda being Clemson.”

What kind of offensive package will you be running against San Fernando, or what all will we see you do as a quarterback on Friday?

“It will be the normal Reseda offense. I will be under center, in the gun, and in the spread going deep and hitting the short routes. You will see me doing everything a quarterback does and run the ball. We will go off what the defense gives us and win that way.”

You guys have Valley Mission games upcoming, what are your goals for the final five remaining regular season games?

“My goal is for us to win out. Our goal is to go 10-0, just like in 2011.”

Of the remaining games, which ones are you most excited to play?

“Definitely San Fernando and Sylmar. There has been a lot of people have been talking on Sylmar’s side about how they will beat us. We are ready for that game.”

With recruiting, which schools are showing interest?

“Dartmouth, Arizona State is showing more interest, and UNLV has been showing lot of interest. Oregon is showing interest too.”

Any last thoughts or words?

“Yes. I want to give a shout out to my lineman – the Fat Pack. That is what they call themselves.”

Ezekiel, great catching up with you today and good luck on Friday against San Fernando.

“Thank you.”
