Things not only move fast on the gridiron, but off it as well. During the 2019 season Roman Mula ran both a triple-option and then went into a Spread attack passing for nearly 1,000 yards with 17 touchdowns and rushed for another 500 getting into the end zone 10 times against 3A Louisiana defenses. The offseason brought college football interest to the Parkview Baptist dual-threat with teams like Ole Miss hosting him for a Junior Day, a Junior Day invite from FAU along with Western Kentucky, Lamar, and South Alabama scouting his progress. This spring both Southern University (March 20) and Air Force (May 13) offered with the Falcons landing their target as announced on Thursday, June 18, 2020.

In an RNG follow-up interview, Mula takes us behind the scenes on his recruiting process and verbal commitment to Air Force.

Interview

Roman, congratulations on your commitment to Air Force.

“Thank you.”

If you will, take us through the recruiting process between you and the Air Force coaching staff from interest to offer.

“About two or three months ago they started texting me asking questions about my height weight, wanting my transcripts, medical questions, wingspan – I sent them a picture of my wingspan with measuring tape on the wall. A week after that, they told me, “we like your film, we will be in touch soon.” About a month ago, four or five coaches all started following, all of them in one day. Later they told me our whole staff likes you, we are excited about you, and their Baton Rouge recruiter called later that night and offered me.”

Very cool. What were they telling you they like about your skills as a quarterback?

“They said they like my athleticism and poise. They had talked to a lot of coaches and people about me and loved everything about me and what I can bring to the table – my speed, athleticism, and arm strength, all of it.”

On May 13 you announced they had offered you. How did they offer you and what was that moment like for you?

“They called around 5:30, and they were straight forward saying “we want to offer you a scholarship.” I was super excited, that was my first FBS offer. My family and I were really excited.”

At what point did you start to lean towards committing to the Falcons?

“After about one-and-a-half months, I was always thinking about it. I love the life after football that Air Force offers, the service part is a huge honor as well. They can pay their players, which made it an easy decision. Their interest in me was a big part of it. They were texting me on a daily basis; if a school wants me that much, I will commit.”

Who on staff did you give your commitment to and when did you do it?

“I committed yesterday (Wednesday), and I just posted it today. Jordan Eason (OL), I called him and told him I was committing. They were super pumped, then a bunch of their coaches started texting me congratulating me.”

Right before you had that meeting, knowing what was racing through your mind, what were you feeling and thinking?

“I was antsy and excited to tell him; this is a life changing deal. My family was super pumped, the Air Force coaches were pumped, and I was super happy.”

Knowing now that all the hard work put into your game has paid off allowing you to earn a college degree while playing football, how do you feel?

“It feels very rewarding for sure. My whole life I have played football, worked with trainers, and put countless hours into it. My family is thankful to have my college paid for and that I get to play football at the same time.”

What will you do to celebrate this achievement?

“Probably… I don’t know. Today, I have received a lot of calls and my dad will grill tonight. We will take it as it comes. I have been overwhelmed by this opportunity and the calls and texts from family and friends.”

Roman, thanks for your time today, congratulations, again, on your commitment, and put a burger on the grill for me.

“Thank you.”
