Out of the fertile cradle of great high school quarterbacks matriculating to the collegiate level, Hank Bachmeier is among the best in his class not only in the state of California but nationally as well. The four-star Class of 2019 talent has a long track record of filling up the stat sheet for Murrieta Valley in meaningful ways and is back at it during his senior year picking apart the opposition.

Bachmeier worked his way to elite status in California the hard way, taking on all challengers and rising to the occasion each time. During his sophomore year, he threw for 3,862 yards with 46 touchdowns against just three interceptions and ran for another 679 with eight more scores posted in an 11-3 season with a run to the title game. A tough loss second round of the playoff against Centennial in 2017 kept a couple extra games off the schedule, but Bachmeier once again slung the ball around the yard proficiently accumulating 3,255 yards with 42 touchdowns and rushed for 776 yards going into the end zone 10 more times.

With 20 scholarship offers reported, on May 9, the 6-2, 200-pound, field general closed his recruiting process with a hard commit to Boise State. Without worries from the recruiting trail to focus on his senior season, Bachmeier is off to the races again completing 93 of 146 passes for 1,401 yards with 13 touchdowns tossed racking up another 243 yards on the ground with five more scores. The Nighthawks have put together a 2-3 season playing against some of the best competition in California and with a young squad, and leading the way to another playoff run is Bachmeier.

In a Recruiting News Guru mid-season catch-up interview, I sat down with the Broncos’ commit getting insight on his senior season and his growing skillset in the pocket.

Interview

Hank, you are having another great season in the pocket already throwing for over 1,400 yards. Where are you seeing the biggest improvement in your game this year over last year?

“My awareness and confidence on the field is a big improvement. That is a big factor for me this year. Schematically, what we are doing, I am confident in the offense with the players and coaches. Preparation has been a big factor as well, that is helping my confidence.”

The Nighthawks have played some very tough teams already this year, teams like Santiago, Cajon, and San Clemente; through the first five games, which game was the toughest for you but how did that challenge help make you a better quarterback?

“I’d say all the games, because we are really young and inexperienced. Getting game experience has made us a better team and forming us into the team we are becoming. We are young, for these guys to get live bullets is huge especially against some of these talented teams. We are executing better and better each week and we are getting better and better. We’ve made big strides getting ready for Southwestern League games.”

Which game has been your best thus far and why do you consider that to be your best?

“I’d say as a unit the San Clemente game. We lost to them two years in a row. They beat us in state two years ago. It was awesome to get a win (55-38) against them. We came back in the fourth quarter for the win. That game was a game that reflected how hard we are working. It was a great win for us to finally beat them.”

How are teams trying to defend your dual-threat abilities this year?

“They are defending me by not letting me get out of the pocket and attacking me. Regardless, we go out there and execute our offense each week. We’ve played two Top 25 nationally ranked teams in Oaks Christian and Cajon. For us to be playing such ridiculously big and talented teams as a smaller public school in the D-I ranks, it is an awesome experience being an underdog week after week and competing against all these top teams. We beat Oaks Christian and Cajon last year. This has been an awesome ride. It has been exciting seeing us get better each week and improving going into league action.”

You guys took care of Buena Park 63-20 last night (Thursday), how did the game go for you?

“It went really well. Statistically it went well but I could have done a few things better. I’m not sure what my stats were, I think I had over 300 yards with four touchdowns (314 yards/4 TDs). (Boise State) Coach (Bryan) Harsin (head coach) and Andy Avalos (defensive coordinator) were there. That was cool for them to be there to watch. It was awesome.”

What did the Boise State coaches say about your game?

“They said they enjoyed watching me play and that they were excited about the future. It was awesome for them to come out, I hope they enjoyed it.”

Next week you get Chaparral, what kind of game are you expecting from their defense?

“Chaparral, that is league play. The Southwestern League is one of the toughest in California. Against Chaparral last year, we were losing to them at halftime. They will play us tough again. We have won it two years in a row against them. We have only lost one game league since I have been here. We have to keep working hard if we want to beat Chaparral; I think they are undefeated (5-0). They have great players and a new head coach (Andrew Ramer). It will be an exciting game. They have great momentum coming into the game.”

As mentioned, on May 9, you verbally committed to Boise State, how is that relationship growing this fall?

“It has been awesome. I was up there for the UConn game. Coach Harsin gave me a big hug when he saw me. The whole staff treats my family like they are family. That is the best thing I can ask for with a program. I want to be happy where I am at in college. I am ready to come in and work hard. I have a great comfort level with the entire staff, that is why I committed there.”

When do you go back up to Boise?

“I think their next home game is against San Diego State, that is my official visit date (Oct. 6). They have a bye week this week and then play Wyoming.”

Are you helping recruit others to become a Bronco?

“Yeah. I am doing my best to help build the best class we can. Casey (Kline), Keegan (Duncan), Ben (Dooley), Jacob (Golden) and I are working hard as a unit to help contribute to the Boise State recruiting class as much as possible. Our goal is to have a great class joining us.”

Hank, thanks for your time today and congratulations on the big win against Buena Park. Good luck in league action.

“Thank you.”
