After three years of varsity action on the gridiron with Carrollton High School, Class of 2021 linebacker Chaz Chambliss has worked his way into one of the best in the nation. The 6-3, 240-pound, terror in the box has been named to every other “all-everything” team receiving every other postseason honor one can image including Georgia 5A All-State, Regional Defensive Player of Year, and USA Today and MaxPreps All-State. Beyond the plaques, the four-star talent was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in his class with 30 reported offers extended. All of that ended publicly on Wednesday with an announcement that he was staying in-state for college ready to suit up with the Georgia Bulldogs.

In a special RNG catch-up interview, Chambliss takes us inside his commitment to Georgia.

Interview

Chaz, congratulations on your commitment to Georgia.

“Thank you.”

What was the personal recruiting process between you and the Georgia staff during your recruitment?

“It kicked up before we got out of school because of the virus with Coach (Dan) Lanning (DC), Coach (Kirby) Smart (HC), and Coach (Scott) Cochran (ST). They were calling and/or texting me every other day.”

Being an in-state school for you, you’ve visited the campus and have great familiarity with the program. What were some of the things that caught your eye and/or that you liked about Georgia leading to your commitment?

“The roster and the guys that have had a bunch of success at Georgia. The coaches too; they made me feel like I was wanted and a big priority.”

When did you verbally commit to the coaching staff?

“I verbally committed last week, I think it was Monday or Tuesday.”

Which coach received the good news first?

“Coach Lanning.”

How did he react to your exciting news?

“He was fired up.”

Right before that meeting, knowing you were making a very big decision, what was going through your mind?

“I was feeling out how every school was coming after me, it came down to that. Georgia wanted me the most of everyone at that time.”

You may have touched on this already, but with all the offers extended to you, what was that one thing that helped push Georgia over the top for you?

“They wanted me more and the connection and bonds I have with guys that have already committed there like (5-star QB) Brock Vandagriff (Prince Ave. Christian).”

Where do they see you fitting into their scheme?

“Outside linebacker.”

Are you going to start helping recruit others to Athens? If so, what will tell the high-profile players wanting to know more about the Georgia program?

“Yes. I will tell them how my process went, but not force them to come to Georgia but tell them why I came. I’ll see if they have the same feelings that I have. We all have a lot of pressure on us, sometimes we just need to talk to someone else who is going through it all.”

Before we wrap, how are your offseason workouts coming along?

“It is going great. I am stronger, faster, and more conditioned than ever. We are going back to work as a team on June 8 in small groups with the regulations.”

Have you maxed out recently in the weight room?

“Yes, sir. I got 525 on squat and 375 on bench.”

What has been your daily workout routine this spring?

“I workout from 9:00 until 12:00 doing everything.”

Chaz, congratulations again on your commitment and good luck with the team workouts coming up.

“Thank you.”
