Louisiana high school defenses did not take the warning sent out during the 2017 season by quarterback Caleb Holstein. The gunslinging quarterback showed a snippet of his talents during his sophomore year and then came out firing on all cylinders in 2018. The outcome was a march to the 4A championship game for St. Thomas More and over 3,500 yards passing for Holstein.

When the lights went up on the 2017 season, Holstein put his rising talents to the test passing for 1,780 yards on 130 of 226 passing with 16 touchdowns tossed and five rushing scores going up on the board. With experience and a wide array of growing talents at his disposal, the 6-4, 215-pound, took control during his junior campaign rolling over defenses for 3,584 yards completing 245 of 342 passes with 47 touchdowns and four rushing scores earning three-star recruiting status.

The cumulative talents for Holstein have college coaches coming to the yard to watch. To date, the Lafayette area product has six offers coming from Cincinnati, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, Harvard, and Yale. To learn more about his overall recruiting process and skill on the field, I sat down with Holstein for a quick Q&A interview.

Interview

Caleb, how did your game as a passing quarterback improve last season?

“It improved because of my experience and being more comfortable in the pocket. The game slowed down for me. I had confidence that I was making the right reads and making the right decisions out there. My decision making was a big improvement last season.”

The understanding of the game for a quarterback is equally important, how did that improve for you?

“I spent a lot of time after my basketball season watching film from my previous season. I really dove in deep within the offense. I learned a lot – how things shift from the defense mid-play and then knowing what to do with the ball. My understanding of post-snap reads improved a lot.”

What do you feel are the strengths to your game?

“I think I can make all the throws. I have a good understanding of the game, I am making the right reads, and I fully know the offense.”

What are you working on this offseason?

“I am working on my athleticism and I am working on building muscle. As a quarterback, I am working on my footwork in the pocket. I am also working on getting yards with my feet when nothing is there.”

Are you attending any national camps or combines this offseason?

“Yes. I am going to Nike Opening-Elite 11 Regional in Nashville and the Adidas Three-Stripe Camp in New Orleans.”

Which schools are showing interest in you but have not offered yet?

“I am receiving interest from LSU, they stay in touch with me, Kentucky and Memphis.”

Which schools have offered you so far?

“Cincinnati, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, Harvard and Yale.”

Have you visited any schools yet?

“Yes, sir. I have visited Memphis.”

How did your visit with Memphis go?

“I thought it was great. I am building a relationship with the coaches there. The coaching staff at Memphis, they seem like great people.”

Do you have any planned visits you may take upcoming?

“None officially planned, but I would like to visit Louisiana Tech, ULL, LSU and whoever else decides to invite me for a visit.”

Caleb, I appreciate your time today and wish you luck at the upcoming camps.

“Thank you.”
