Sophomore gunslinger Preston Welch is putting his name on the map this season, and that is bad news for 4A Louisiana teams. After a 5-5 run a year ago, the young quarterback has helped lead his Teurlings Catholic team to a 5-0 start in 2021. The first-year starter has thrown for 1,136 yards and nine touchdowns by completing 69 of 115 passes. The comfort level in the pocket is only going to increase as the season goes on and the Rebels hit their stride before the playoffs.

This 6’2”, 190-pound, pro-style quarterback has a strong and accurate arm which he uses to make throws all over the gridiron. The 2024 prospect attended several camps this offseason to hone his craft to help achieve his goals not only this year but for the rest of his career at Teurlings Catholic.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with Preston to talk about his sophomore season on the football field.

Interview

Preston, how has your sophomore season been going thus far?

My sophomore season is going well. Our team is really coming together. The school and community are excited about our 4-0 start and it’s been fun to be a part of this special season so far.

What has been your most memorable moment through the first four games?

Beating Notre Dame, because we’ve lost to them for the last seven seasons. It was really special for everyone to break that streak.

What are your strengths on the football field?

Reading defenses, my arm strength, and my competitive nature.

What kind of offense does your team run?

We have a balanced offense. We can alter our offense depending on what the defense shows us.

How do your skills fit into this offensive scheme?

I can make different throws all over the field.

What do you like most about playing quarterback?

I like competing and the pressure situations. I like leading our team toward our goals of winning the district and winning a state championship.

How would you describe your style of play?

A mobile pocket passer. I can sling it both inside and outside the pocket.

Would you consider yourself a dual-threat or pro-style quarterback?

Prostyle, because I like staying in the pocket and reading defenses. However, I scramble on 20 to 30 percent of the plays.

Is there an NFL player that you try to model your game after?

Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow.

What is your fastest 40-yard dash time?

4.8.

Do you play any other sports at Teurlings Catholic?

I play basketball.

What is your favorite subject in school and why?

Math, because there is a concrete answer to any problem.

Who is your role model and why?

Jake Delhomme, because he is a Teurlings Catholic graduate and went on to play at the Division I level and in the NFL. He is a great competitor and accomplished all the goals I have for myself.

What are your goals for your sophomore season?

I want to win district and win state then be named First Team All-District and First Team All-State.

What game left on the schedule are you most looking forward to playing?

St. Thomas More.

What is your GPA?

3.2.

Thank you for your time and good luck the rest of the season.

Thank you, sir.
