NCAA Transfer Portal: 46 Former 4- and 3-Star Quarterbacks Still Available

The transfer portal continues to be a source of frustration and hope for college football fans across the country. No one position is more scrutinized in the game than quarterback, and every college football program is seemingly in need. If the 2020 postseason snap shot of those players leaving for another opportunity under center continues to hold true, missing out on a four-star in a given recruiting class may still bear fruit in years to come.

Hopefully college coaches are learning how to be good sports when a top player at a given position informs that he sees his future at a different program on National Signing Day. Closing the book on recruiting a prospect may only be temporary going forward as more players throw their hat into the NCAA Transfer Portal. In this cycle, four-star quarterbacks such as Tanner Mordecai has gone from Oklahoma to SMU, Ethan Garbers from Washington to UCLA, and McKenzie Milton from UCF to FSU.

The list is not limited to up-and-coming prospects potentially buried on the depth chart, but also includes starting quarterbacks like Ryan Hilinski going from South Carolina to Northwestern, Jack Coan from Wisconsin to Notre Dame, and Grant Gunnell from Texas Tech to Memphis. The portal can even shock with players like Tyler Shough leaving Oregon for Texas Tech after finishing second in the Pac-12 during the 2020 season in passing yards (1,559) and touchdowns tossed (13) while leading the conference in yards per completion (9.3).

As the spring semester starts to wrap on college campuses, with an eye towards the 2021 season, college coaches are hoping to catch that signal caller in the portal who can come in making an immediate difference. At any time a player like former LSU starter TJ Finley can hit the free agent wire giving a big boost to the right program.
