A big season awaits Class of 2020 cornerback George Bowers IV. The 5-10, 165 pound, defender worked his trade for Bakersfield High School’s junior varsity team during his sophomore year readying himself for the challenge of playing Division-I California varsity football during his junior campaign. The offseason has been filled with one workout after another and 7v7 ball with one of the nation’s best programs, ProWay, further pushing his skillset forward. There is a buzz and excitement around what Bowers can bring to the Drillers’ defense in 2018.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the Drillers’ rising talent to learn more about his game and upcoming college camp circuit.

Interview

George, you made an impact at the JV level last season playing corner, how did you prepare for your sophomore season?

“During the offseason, I trained hard. I was going three days a week to Larry Parker and working with my dad. I take it one day at a time to become a better defensive back and a better all-around player.”

How did you prepare for each game during the week?

“I watched a lot of film. I took mental notes and worked on my footwork to play the receiver and the offense. I studied their plays over and over – it helped on the field.”

How did your overall game improve last year?

“I showed a big improvement over my freshman season. I got bigger and faster. My intensity my freshman made up for my lack of size and speed. I prepared for every game like it was my last.”

What are you working on this offseason?

“I’m working on my eye discipline with the receiver’s hips. That was a weak spot of mine last year. My coaches have been helping me with that. I’ve been working on my back pedal, reading the offense, my splits – I have a whole list of things I have been working on this offseason.”

Will we see you at other positions during your junior season?

“I will be on kick return, kickoffs, and some at receiver next year.”

Are you playing 7v7 ball?

“Yes. I play with ProWay.”

How is that helping improve your game?

“I get to play against top talent and against guys with more experience. I take notes and try to learn from them. Coach Derrick Holmes has helped me a lot. ProWay is a great program to be a part of.”

Have you attended any camps this spring?

“I went to the Blue-Grey All-American Camp.”

How did that go?

“I won defensive MVP. They had a great camp.”

Do you have any upcoming camps set or any college camps you might attend?

“Yes. I have a lot. On June 2, I am attending a UCLA camp. On June 3, I’m going to an Arizona State camp. On June 10, I will be at a Northern Arizona camp. I am going to a USC camp, a Redlands camp – Oregon will be there Washington and other Pac-12 schools. I’m also going to a San Jose State camp – there are more I am going to but I cannot remember them all. Every weekend in June, I will be at a camp.”

Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?

“Northern Arizona, Portland State, and I am receiving a little interest from Oregon.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?

“I have been to USC on an unofficial visit.”

Are you playing any other sports for Bakersfield?

“Track and basketball.”

Which events in track?

“The triple jump, long jump, 100, 200, and 4×1.”

Wow. That is a lot of events. Which event is your best?

“The triple jump. I won state in eighth grade and placed 4th in triple jump last season.”

Impressive. What goals have you set for yourself this offseason?

“I want to become a better all-around player and a better person. I want to be my best self. I am working for that first offer – I’ve been praying hard for that.”

What do you love about playing football?

“I’ve always had a passion for football. I eat, sleep, and breathe for football. The love I have for it is tremendous. Football has been a part of my life since I was eight-years-old. It fits me. I love it.”

George, thanks for your time today and good luck with all the upcoming camps.

“Thank you.”
