The future on the gridiron at Greenville High Academy is a bright one with Class of 2021 quarterback Marshall Skoloff in the pocket. As the Red Raiders were pushing forward towards a 12-2 season in 2017 against South Carolina 4A competition, Skoloff was working his craft in practice and in games behind rising star Davis Beville (3 offers). The freshman appeared in six varsity games connecting on 19-of-31 passes for 134 yards with one touchdown, and, perhaps most impressively, did not throw an interception. The 6-1, 170 pound, budding talent displayed some dual-threat abilities as well rushing for 95 yards off 14 carries notching his first varsity rushing score.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the young talent finding about his growth on the field during his freshman season while gaining insight to his offseason workouts and goals.

Interview

Marshall, what was the 2017 season like for you getting snaps as a freshman on the Red Raiders varsity team?

“It was a great experience. I was able to see what my future will be like and I was learning along the way. I was seeing the right and wrong ways to do things and learning from what I did wrong and then moving on working to get better.”

What were some of the adjustments you had to make to your game playing against varsity talent?

“I had to focus in more. Before games I am usually a really happy guy. I realized with varsity games I had to get serious. I had to be ready to carry the team to a win if needed.”

How did the coaches work you into the varsity games during the season?

“At the end of the games or if we were winning by enough, the coaches would put me into the game. They would work me and see what I could do with different plays. The coaches wanted to practice me in games to see where my skillset is at so far.”

What kind of plays did they have you execute?

“Running plays, run options, speed options, and roll out passes – which went really well. The stuff I was not good at in games, we would work on in practice.”

You got a little bit of a break in 2017 also playing against junior varsity players, how did you do at the JV level?

“I feel like I could have performed better than I did. Everything was varsity for me, when I went down to the JV level the game slowed down. But, everything came back to me. It was pretty easy and awesome.”

Overall, how did your game improve last season?

“I feel like I got a lot faster with my footwork, speed, how I was reading defenses, and seeing who was open. I adapted to it pretty well.”

What are some of the things you feel you do well in the pocket at this stage of your development?

“In the pocket, I feel like the 3-step hitch, curl, post, flat – I’m doing all of that well. I feel like I am pretty good at the pre-snap read. We focus on that in practice. After working on it so much in practice, I see it in the games right away.”

What are you working on this offseason?

“I’m lifting weights, getting faster and quicker, and watching film with Davis Beville. He picked up an offer from Cincinnati on Wednesday. My goal is to play college football. I am learning from Davis and putting what he does into my game.”

Are you playing 7v7 ball?

“Yes, sir. But, we have not started yet.”

Are you attending any camps or combines this spring or summer?

“Yes, sir. I plan on attending camps at N.C. State, UVA (Virginia), James Madison, Coast Carolina, South Carolina, Wake Forest, UNC (North Carolina), Garner Webb, and Dartmouth.”

Nice. You will be busy. Are any schools already showing recruiting interest in you?

“Yes, sir. N.C. State, Appalachian State, South Carolina, Garner Webb, and Coastal Carolina.”

Favorite subject in school?

“World Geography.”

As much of the game for a quarterback is knowing what is going on throughout the game, both with their own offense and with what the defense is trying to do. You talked about this a little bit earlier, but what else are you doing this offseason to expand your knowledge of the game to help ensure success during your sophomore season?

“I am working with my head coach and quarterback trainer going over schemes and asking questions. I am asking questions when the defense is in a Cover 2 formation or in any formation. I am asking a lot of questions to expand my knowledge of the game.”

Is there a next level quarterback you watch to learn more about the game?

“I love watching Derek Carr fan. I am a big Oakland Raiders fan. I love watching the Raiders.”

Last question. It is a tough one, who do you have in the Super Bowl, New England or Philadelphia?

“I want Philadelphia to win, but New England’s offense is unstoppable. I am not a fan of the Patriots. I want the Eagles to win.”

Marshall, thanks for your time today and good luck with your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
