Since the laborious efforts of Rich Brooks in the late 70’s and through the 1980’s, success was finally found in Eugene ending the 80’s going into the early 1990’s. The continued efforts of head Mike Bellotti made Oregon a winner and Chip Kelly took the Ducks to the promised land producing a 46-7 record over a four-year run (2009-12) with a BCS National Championship Game appearance in 2010. With success found under Mark Helfrich, it is now Mario Cristobal’s show. The former Miami Hurricanes offensive lineman appeared to be on the cusp of returning the Ducks atop the college football ranks in 2019 with a 12-2 record that included a Rose Bowl win. Loaded with talent, last year was to be the season Oregon made their College Football Playoff run, but 2020 happened. Attention now turns to acquiring more top high school talent for that return to the National Championship Game.
Under Cristobal, Oregon has consistently recruited among the best in the nation producing a seventh ranked class in 2019 with a No. 11 haul in 2020. There is a continued wealth of five-, four-, and three-star players attached to Coach Cristobal’s efforts along the recruiting trail, and the 2021 haul is no different. Currently ranked No. 6 nationally, tops in the Pac-12, the Ducks have 21 players attached to the latest cycle, 16 four-stars and five three-star prospects.
The good news, all 21 recruits have signed their National Letters of Intent during the Early Signing Period. A focus was given to the offensive line (4), receivers (5), linebackers (4), and defensive backs (4). California remains a big draw for Oregon with five signees from the Golden State, but talent was brought in from 11 different states. Two of the biggest draws were four-star offensive linemen Kingsley Suamataia from Utah and Bram Walden out of Arizona.
With protection in the future pocket from Suamataia and Walden, cornerstone four-star quarterback Ty Thompson will have top targets in Troy Franklin and Dont’e Thornton. The defense added top playmakers in Mater Dei cornerback Jaylin Davies and in-state linebacker Keith Brown.
Additional talent to Oregon’s class may be added on Wednesday, Feb. 3, when National Signing Day engulfs the landscape of college football.
