In addition to the usual tough games found in the Mission League, Junipero Serra has played through a brutal 2018 non-conference football schedule. The Cavaliers have taken on rival Serra, Cathedral Catholic, Long Beach Poly, and Narbonne posting a 4-5 record with a shot at making the Division-I CIF Playoffs. Through the ups and downs of the rigorous season, the Cavs have continued to show their will to win and fight thanks to senior leadership and talented Class of 2020 quarterback Doug Brumfield.

Brumfield has seemingly seen it all this season connecting on 199 of 325 passes for 2,714 yards with 20 touchdowns while adding a little dual-threat to his game with 167 yards on the ground. Beyond the non-conference showdowns, the stats have been compiled against the likes of Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), Bishop Amat, Alemany, and Chaminade. The challenges have not slowed the progress of the 6-5, 200-pound, field general and has further drawn in national recruiting interest. Brumfield holds an offer from Utah with teams like Cal, Washington State, San Diego State, and Florida State showing interest.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the rising three-star recruit covering his season in the pocket with insight on his growing recruiting process.

Interview

Doug, by all accounts you’ve had a fantastic season throwing for over 2,700-yards with 20 touchdowns. What all are you doing well in the pocket from a mechanics and technique standpoint allowing you to be so successful?

“One thing that is helping me is being patient, trusting our plays, and the help from my coaches. With more experience being in the system, I am thinking faster and everything is coming easier. My offensive line is helping me; they are giving me time to throw. I am processing everything easier which is helping me be more successful.”

The team has been in some knockdown-drag out gridiron battles this season. Of all the tough games, which game was the hardest or most challenging for you personally?

“For me, it was probably the Cathedral Catholic game (lost 42-21). That was a tough one. We could not get things going.”

I was there for that one. The refs did not help you guys at all in that one. Putting that aside, how did that challenge against Cathedral Catholic help you grow as a quarterback?

“It helped me develop more. It helped me, become a more mature as a player. Things may not always go your way on the field. I learn how to bounce back from things like that and keep going.”

Which game this season has been your best?

“I’d say the Alemany game (won 26-15) or in Week 1 against Serra (won 41-22). We were on a roll in those game, we had minimum mistakes as a team. It was fun out there playing with my teammates.”

How have your leadership skills improved this season?

“I have tried to be more vocal than in the past. In the past I was not as vocal. As the season has gone on, I have learned that I have to be more vocal for the team and be a better leader.”

How do you prepare for a game through the week?

“I prepare the same each week. We come in on Monday to watch film from the last game and learn from our mistakes. We practice hard on Monday and Tuesday to get ready for that week’s game. We do Yoga on Wednesday and practice in the morning. We do a walk-through on Thursday to get ready to play on Friday. Before the game, I go out early to play catch with Justin Houston.”

The Cavaliers close out Mission League action on Friday against Loyola, what kind of challenge will their defense bring to the field for you guys?

“Their defensive line is good. They line up in weird formations with a lot of movement. Our offensive line is young, it will be tough. Once we adjust to them, we feel we can beat them one-on-one.”

With recruiting, which schools are showing interest in you?

“Nevada, Cal, Washington State, Florida State – I have talked to them a few times, San Diego State, UCLA, and Colorado are all showing interest.”

You have an offer from Utah, how did they offer you?

“I received my Utah offer in April during spring ball. Coach (Sharrieff) Shah (cornerbacks) saw me during our 7v7 drills; he wanted to offer me on the spot.”

Very cool. Have you visited any schools yet?

“Yes. This season, I went to UCLA for the Fresno State game. It was nice there. The MVP room and all the games, it was nice there.”

Do you have any planned visits upcoming?

“I am planning on taking one to San Diego State, Utah – that one for sure, and maybe Colorado or Washington State.”

Last couple of question. What are you doing for Halloween this year?

“Hallowed is on a school day this year, hopefully we are in playoff mode. I’m not sure what I will do. After practice I will go home and chill out and hand out candy. Nothing too much.”

Do you have a favorite movie you like to watch for Halloween?

Hocus Pocus, my mom watches that. She is pregnant so she can’t do much this year for Halloween so I have been watching the movie with her.”

Nice. Doug, I appreciate your time today and good luck in the finale against Loyola.

“Thank you.”
