Versatility on the gridiron is hard to come by at any level. One person making it look fairly easy is Class of 2018 defensive back Tre’von Gauno. Gauno has started every position in the secondary for Dodge City during the 2017 season getting better and better every time he touches the field.

The long road for Gauno from Terrebonne High School in Louisiana to Dodge City Community College is finally paying off. The former Class of 2015 standout athlete began his college career at Shasta College but had to take a break for family reasons. The break away from the game is showing no ill effects for the 4.43 speedster filling in for Conquistadors at corner, nickel back, and safety, logging starts at all three positions in 2017.

Dodge City has started with a 3-4 record with games left against Fort Scott, Garden City, Coffeyville, and Hutchinson – enough time for college coaches to continue their evaluation of the 6-0, 175 pound, athlete. An estimated stat line through the first five games of the season has Gauno with 20 total tackles, at least four passes broken up, and a fumble recovery. Teams showing interest in Gauno’s abilities includes Washington State, Colorado, Lamar, and Arizona State.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the versatile defensive back getting an update on his sophomore campaign.

Interview

Trevon, you are halfway through your sophomore season, how has the season gone for you so far?

“The season has been going well. Through the first five games, I have made a lot of plays. I’ve had a lot of big plays – stripping balls, getting interceptions, and chasing down people.”

Where all are you playing on the field for Dodge City?

“During the first game, I was second-string at cornerback. The starter was kicked out for targeting. I came in against Highland squaring off against their top receiver, a bounce back from South Carolina. I had three pass breakups, a pick, and three or four tackles. The next game against Iowa Central, I was starting and I started the next one after that (Texas Institute A&T), but I did not start the next.

“The coaches started playing me more time at safety. I played a lot at corner in Game 4 (Ellsworth) but I also played strong safety and some at nickel. Our last game against Indy (Independence), I played the entire game starting at safety.”

Which areas of your game are most improved?

“My covering ability and ball skills. I’ve always had that. I’m reading offenses faster. My attention to detail has improved and reading my keys has gotten better. During our last game, I feel like I was reading keys my best then. I was coming down making plays fast.”

Which game this season has been your best?

“Against Indy, I had a 10-tackle game. I broke up four passes and had a fumble recovery. That was my first game starting at safety. After the Indy game, I was told that was one of the best games played in the conference this year. I was showing up against D-I guys.”

Last time out, the team had a hard-fought game against Independence (lost 32-28), how has that setback helped push the team forward this week in preparation for Iowa Western?

“Every game we’ve lost this year has been a one possession game. We’ve had the ball at the end of the game but come up short. Every game has been a tough game. We have to finish better on offense, on defense, and on special teams. We do not feel like a 3-3 team. Teams may take us lightly, but we are putting up a hard fight against everyone we play.”

How will Iowa Western’s offense challenge you and the defense on Saturday?

“They are the best offense we will face this year. They will be our toughest challenge of the year. They like to run the ball. We have been doing really well stopping the run. We’ve been holding teams in the first half, we just have to finish stronger and play our assignments.”

*Against Iowa Western, Gauno had eight tackles, an interception, two passes broken up, and returned a blocked field goal 35 yards.

Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?

“Washington State, Lamar, Colorado, and Arizona State. A lot of schools are waiting on my film. Right now, I’m just worried about the season and playing Iowa Western.”

What is a strength of yours that you would want every college coach to know about you?

“I think I am a versatile defensive back. I have started every position in the secondary this year – corner, nickel, and safety. You can move me around because of my speed.”

How is everything going in the classroom this semester?

“Everything is going great in the classroom.”

Tre’von, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of the season.

“Thank you.”
