There are few Class of 2017 players who did as much with their time on the field as Troy Spencer did during the 2015 season. The budding Centennial High School star was part of an elite receiving corps of six players that hauled in at least 17 or more receptions during the year highlighted by Javon McKinley’s (Notre Dame) 56 reception season with 1,173 receiving yards with 13 scores but Spencer still managed to separate himself from the pack.

Over the last two seasons, Centennial High School has been as good as any other team in the nation sans in-state rival De La Salle. The Huskies ran their record to 14-1 in 2015 making the California overall state title game for a second consecutive season. There was talent on both sides of the ball in the 2016 and 2017 class yet there was Spencer carving out a niche for himself when the opportunity presented itself. The 5’10”, 180 pound, speedster converted nearly one-third of his receptions into touchdowns ending the year with 22 passes hauled in for 501 yards with six scores (MaxPreps) through 10 games.

Colleges are starting to take notice of Spencer’s abilities. In addition to being able to play on the outside and in the slot, the Corona area talent is also a punt returner and kick returner for the Huskies. Early interest is coming in from teams like Cal, Northern Arizona, and San Jose State. Whoever ends up signing Spencer as part of the 2017 class is getting a fast on fast player with legitimate 4.45 speed who can create space from defenders, is explosive out of his breaks, and has that rare breakaway speed that makes him a threat anytime he touches the ball and from anywhere on the field.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with Spencer during an unofficial visit to UCLA getting a quick rundown on his junior season, his offseason workouts, and a recruiting news update.
