Every now and again an action packed Hollywood movie will slow the reel down at the height of the drama showing the film’s hero taking his long walk towards glory. The audience gets caught up in the moment waiting for the action to pick back up knowing something amazing is about to happen… This analogy is what it has been like waiting for Miles Reed to get his chance to be Centennial High School’s premiere tailback.

Reed showed out when called upon in 2015 rushing for 540 yards off 91 carries with nine trips to the end zone. The Corona squad will feed the tailback position helping Arizona Wildcats Class of 2016 commitment J.J. Taylor to a 2,100-yard season along with 41 touchdowns a year ago. Another 2016 running back, Anthony Catalano, even rushed for over 1,000 yards helping build that anticipation for what Reed will be able to do with a workload waiting for him.

Centennial was one of the best teams in the nation last year running their record to 14-1 before a hard fought 28-21 loss to De La Salle for California’s overall state title. The Huskies are loaded with arguably as much talent on the roster as they had in 2015 giving head coach Matt Logan and company a potential national championship team on their hands.

Next level recruiters are very interested in what Reed will be able to do with the rock in his hands for a full season, especially against the top level talent he will face. The 5’8”, 185 pound, all-purpose back has three offers with Hawaii, Kentucky Christian, and Lake Erie hoping to get a steal of a lifetime in Reed. Reed’s list of potential suitors is spread across the country and includes USC, UCLA, Utah, Arizona, Cal, and Nebraska.

The anticipation for all, including Reed himself, is nearing a fever pitch building up to Centennial’s opening game (Aug. 27) against nationally ranked Chandler High School (Arizona) followed by another slugfest against another loaded high school squad in Florida’s IMG Academy (Sept. 3).

In a Recruiting News Guru stylized interview, I caught up with Reed as summer workouts ended and with fall camp a week away getting an inside scoop on his off-season and how the Huskies look heading into the 2016 schedule.

Interview

Miles, I know you have been busy this off-season showing your skills at 7v7 tournaments and college camps. Which college camps did you attend this summer?

“I went to a USC, Arizona, and Utah camp.”

How did the USC camp go for you?

“It went really well. After the second session I got a notable mention from the USC coaching staff along with my cousin Justin Fisher (Centennial 2017 wide receiver). Coach (Tommie) Robinson and I bonded on a personal level during the camp.”

What did you and Coach Robinson talk about during the camp to help build that bond?

“Both of our families are from Alabama. We talked about that. We talked to me about my footwork and how I did really well. We talked about my route running, my hands, and my decision making. He wants to see more of me this season. They will be getting back to me soon.”

How did the Utah camp go?

“It went well. I met with their running backs coach, Coach (Dennis) Erickson. I talked to him, and got his number. We talked for 15 to 20 minutes. He got my Hudl information and stuff like that.”

Which teams are showing the most interest in you right now?

“Arizona, Utah, Cal, and USC. UCLA has been showing some and I have been getting more from Nebraska.”

I’m guessing everyone is waiting on your early season highlight reel?

“Yes. They want to see what I can do against the schools like Chandler. Everything will roll from there. I don’t plan on having a bad game – I never do.”

Do you have any official or unofficial visits planned?

“I know for sure I am taking an official to Hawaii. Other than that, everything is kind of up in the air. We’ll see how everything goes based off interest after the first couple of games.”

Miles Reed at USC summer 2016

What have you been working on this off-season to prepare for your senior year?

“I have been doing a lot of resistance training so I can hit holes faster. I’ve been working on my hips and feet so I can shift guys around or run through them if I need to. I have been watching more film on past running backs from Centennial to see what they have done in the offense and I’ve been watching film of guys at the pro level.”

How has all the training gone for you?

“I’ve leaned out. I am more muscular now. My legs and arms are bigger.”

You mentioned watching film on guys, have you added any new moves to your repertoire?

“Not really. I have my chop steps down and quicker hips.”

Have you maxed out on any of the football lifts this summer?

“Yes. We maxed out last month. My bench was 295, power clean was up to 295, and my squat was 485.”

Wow. All very impressive. Good job.

“Thank you.”

When does Centennial hit the field for two-a-days or fall camp?

“We just ended our spring ball on Thursday. We have a week off but next week we are back at it again. We will be in full gear hitting and all of that good stuff. That’s when we start the real football stuff.”

I know you guys are loaded, but in your opinion how does the team look heading into the season?

“People don’t see what we see. We are ranked No. 21 nationally, I think. We will be better ranked after the first couple of games. The team chemistry is great. A lot of us have played together since youth league. We are a brotherhood out there. Under Coach Murray at the running back position, we have position dinners. There is a brotherhood within a brotherhood. We are always looking out for each other and helping each other. I like the way we are looking right now.”

Are there any games you are already getting excited to play?

“There are about seven games on our schedule. I’m looking forward to playing Santiago (Oct. 14) and Norco (Oct. 28). Those two teams are our rivals. But the whole preseason before league is circled on my schedule.”

Miles, thanks for your time today and good luck with fall camp.

“Thank you.”
