The start of something big took off during the 2017 season with Timothy “Tim” Williams Jr. lining up at corner for Narbonne High School. The 5-10, 175-pound, defender showed flashes of brilliance during his sophomore campaign, but has taken his skillset to another level this spring playing 7v7 ball with ProWay. Playing with and against some of the best talent in the nation has Williams set to help the Gauchos repeat another California state title run during the 2018 season. In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with one of the Golden State’s top under the radar talents ahead of what should be a big breakout season.

Interview

Tim, by the end of your sophomore season, which areas of your game had changed the most in a positive way?

“I feel I was dominating at corner; I was very productive out there. My cover skills improve. I got better at playing off – not too aggressive, using different schemes, and baiting the quarterback to throw my way.”

Where have you seen improvement in your overall game this offseason?

“I am seeing improvement with my patience at the line. I am letting the receiver make the move instead of rushing it.”

Is there a part of your skillset you are working on this offseason?

“I am working on my transition, getting out of my breaks faster, knowing when receiver is breaking down, and getting to the ball before he does.”

You played 7v7 this spring with ProWay, how did that competition help push your game forward?

“Oh, it has helped a lot. I have played against a lot of top receivers. Chris Steele has been on the other side at corner. Playing opposite of him, I have learned a lot from him, especially on baiting quarterbacks.”

Do you have any camps on the schedule for this summer?

“I am going to an Oregon camp. I may go to a USC and to a Washington camp, but those two are not set in stone yet.”

Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?

“Louisville is showing interest in me right now.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits this offseason?

“Yes, sir. I have been to Arizona and Arizona State.”

How did the Arizona visit go?

“It was a good visit. I got to meet Coach (Demetrice) Martin (cornerbacks coach). I talked to him about the type of cornerbacks he likes. I saw the campus. It was a great visit.”

How did the ASU visit go?

“The ASU visit was also great. ASU has a big campus. I got to talk to Coach (Antonio) Pierce, I’ve known Coach Pierce for a while now. It was a cool visit. We tried on the jersey. It was a good visit.”

Do you have any planned visits upcoming?

“Louisville is the main one. I am planning on that visit.”

When do the Gauchos start spring ball?

“We started last week. We have our first spring game on Wednesday at Serra High School.”

How is the competition for starting cornerback going for you?

“It is going good. We have some transfers coming in, BJ (Brandon Jones from Grace) and Paul Edwards (from St. John Bosco). We are moving around at different spots and competing out there.”

How does the team look overall this spring?

“We look strong this year. I think we have another championship team. We are strong on defense and on offense again this year.”

In addition to playing corner, are you lining up anywhere else on the field during your junior year?

“I am also playing nickel, some at slot, and some safety. I am staying versatile to help my team out anyway I can.”

Is there a personal goal within your control that you want to accomplish this offseason before the 2018 schedule kicks off?

“Yes. Be the best player I can be, learn from my coaches, and be ready for the season.”

Tim, thanks for your time today and good luck with your spring game on Wednesday.

“Thank you.”
