It’s championship week in Kansas as two one-loss teams, Mill Valley and Bishop Carroll, have advanced through a tough bracket to battle it out for the 5A state crown. Both teams won exciting games last week in the semifinals as Mill Valley beat St. Thomas Aquinas for the second time this season 45-28 and Bishop Carroll flew past Goddard-Eisenhower 34-7.

Bishop Carroll is the defending champion in 5A and can now successfully defend their crown. Mill Valley is making their first appearance in the championship game.

The championship game between this great teams will be played on Nov. 28th on the campus of Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg. Bishop Carroll will make the two and a half hour, 150 mile, trip east from Wichita for the game while Mill Valley will take the two hour, 120 mile, trip south from Shawnee.

Mill Valley

Mill Valley is scoring 43 points a game and put 45 in their semifinal win over St. Thomas Aquinas. The two leaders of this explosive offense are senior quarterback Logan Koch (6’1″, 200 pounds) and senior athlete Christian Jegen. Koch has thrown for 2,292 yards and 31 touchdowns while Jegen has 721 receiving yards, 13 receiving touchdowns, 1,199 rushing yards, and 16 rushing touchdowns this season.

The Jaguars are giving up just 14 points a game this season but gave up 28 last week. The two leaders of this unit are senior linebackers Seth Burnett and Cole Morris (6’4″, 210 pounds). Burnett leads the team with 109 total tackles and has two interceptions while Morris has 82 total tackles and nine sacks.

Bishop Carroll
Bishop Carroll scores 41 points a game on average but fell below their usual high scoring coming up with just 34 in their semifinal win. The two leaders of this offense are quarterback Jake Allen (6’4″, 200 pounds) and senior running back Adam Theis (5’10”, 190 pounds). Allen returned to lead his team in the semifinals after missing the two previous games with a concussion. The senior threw for 84 yards, ran for 37 yards, and threw one touchdown pass. Theis had 138 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, caught a five-yard touchdown pass, and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass in the Golden Eagles win last week.

The Golden Eagles give up just 13 points a game this season and limited their opponent to just seven points in their win last week. The two leaders of this lockdown unit are senior defensive back Evan Nichols (5’11”, 178 pounds) and Brian Karst (6’1″, 185 pounds). These two great athletes have the athleticism to come up with big defensive plays for Bishop Carroll.

It will interesting to see if Bishop Carroll can repeat as champions or can Mill Valley take down the defending champions.
