The recruiting process can be difficult for all involved. Beyond all the years of hard work a recruit puts into his craft on the gridiron, there are thousands of hours put into academics just to be qualified to enroll at a four-year university. On the other side of the situation, life for a college coach trying to find a fit on their roster is not easy either. Hundreds of thousands of hours are poured into game film, meetings, and conversations with various players to try to find that unique connection that works on multiple levels. When a home is found for a recruit with a new football family, a time for celebration is to be had.

When San Diego State and Rancho Cucamonga cornerback Tayari Venable found one another on Saturday, Jan. 21, the beginnings of a very bright future started.

Venable worked his way into being a prized three-star recruit with the Cougars popping up on recruiting boards during his junior season. An early offer from Washington State led to a July 1 commitment in 2015. Offers kept coming in for the 6-1, 180 pound, talent as he helped his squad to a 12-1 record in 2016. In stats through 10 games, Venable had 35 tackles with eight passes defended, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

On Sept. 30, a change of heart came about for Venable. With 11 offers on the table from teams like Washington State, Fresno State, Oregon State, Air Force, Eastern Washington, Hawaii, New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV, Army, and Nevada, Venable went into the unknown to try to find his fit. Official visits were taken to Oregon State and Nevada. His third official visit produced his twelfth offer and a commitment to the Aztecs.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Venable to get the inside scoop on how SDSU gained his verbal commitment.

Interview

Tayari, first, congratulations on your commitment to San Diego State.

“Thank you.”

Let’s set everything up. Did you release a list of your top schools?

“No, not really. Oregon State, Nevada, and San Jose State were the main schools I was talking to during the process. San Diego State and I started talking more and more so I scheduled a visit.”

How did the offer come about for you from SDSU?

“We were sitting at dinner Saturday night. They offered me a scholarship and I committed right there.”

Did you have an idea they were going to offer you?

“Yeah, I had a feeling.”

What was going through your mind when they offered?

“I was really excited. That was a great moment and a great night all together.”

Did you hesitate to commit?

“No hesitation. I knew once I stepped on campus that I wanted to commit to SDSU. Once I met with the players and the coaches I knew that is where I wanted to be.”

Which coach offered you?

“Coach (Danny) Gonzales (safeties).”

What was Coach Gonzales’ reaction when you committed right then and there?

“He was happy. He said ‘oh – right now? That’s good. This is great.’ He was happy to have me become part of the family.”

Who went on the trip to San Diego with you?

“My mom and dad.”

What did they think about SDSU?

“They loved it. They loved everything about it.”

Which position is SDSU recruiting you to play?

“Corner and safety.”

I know there is not much time left, but are you going to help recruit others to join you at SDSU?

“Yeah, I will try my best.”

Do you have any players you would like to target already?

“None at the moment. They have Darren Hall (Rancho Cucamonga 2017 DB) committed too. That is a great duo right there.”

It is. What are you going to work on during the off-season to prepare for your freshman season at SDSU?

“I’m working on my ball skills, breaking on the ball and I’m trying to get bigger, stronger, and faster.”

Did the SDSU coaches give you anything specific to work on before you report?

“Nothing for now, just try to get bigger.”

Tayari, congratulations again on your commitment and thank you for your time today.

“Thank you.”
