CIF-Southern Section Top 10 High School Teams – Division I-XIII

The first week of California high school football is in the books and the first shakeup in the rankings has already taken place. A few upsets have helped realign the CIF-Southern Section rankings giving way to a new top dog in Division III.

Two of last week’s Top 5 teams in the Division I classification opened the season with tough losses with neither team needing to hang their head. St. John Bosco remained the No. 2 ranked team by CIF-SS, and the No. 2 ranked team in the state by MaxPreps, after a 9-6 overtime loss to Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas. Serra (Gardena) slipped from No. 4 in CIF-SS’ rankings to No. 5 after dropping a 17-14 thriller to Narbonne, a CIF-City Section team. MaxPreps ranks the Cavilers No. 8 in the state moving the Narbonne Gauchos to No. 5 overall in California. Bosco gets a breather of sorts this week facing Garces Memorial (Bakersfield) before traveling to Chaminade on Sept. 8. Narbonne gets a chance to show just how tough they really are with a showdown against Long Beach Poly this week. Serra gets back on the field in San Diego taking on one of Hawaii’s top teams, Punahou, in the Honor Bowl.

Chaminade moved up a spot after easily handling D-II Oaks Christian 47-10 at home. The loss dropped Oaks Christian from No. 2 to No. 8 in their classification. The Chaminade Eagles are now the No. 7 ranked team in California by MaxPrep’s with another challenge this week taking on Arizona’s No. 2 ranked Mountain Pointe in Orange County.

Murrieta Valley dropped out of the Top 10 in this week’s rankings after the Nighthawks lost 30-28 to Santiago (Corona). And, San Clemente dropped out but for unknown reasons after upending Oceanside 28-18 on the road.

In the D-II ranks, unranked Tesoro gave Edison all they could handle before falling 48-47 on what some are calling a controversial denied two-point Titans conversion. Either way, Edison remains atop the rankings and moved to No. 6 in MaxPreps’ poll. Oaks Christian and Norco dropped from No. 2 and No. 3 respectively filling in at No. 6 for Norco and No. 8 for Oaks Christian this week. La Habra dropped from the poll making room for Cathedral.

Division III saw the biggest movement with Sierra Canyon and Buena Park falling from No. 1 and No. 2 to No. 6 and No. 8. Sierra Canyon fell 25-7 on the road to Westlake. Buena Park won their contest over Pasadena 31-25. Lompoc made the biggest jump from No. 10 to No. 3. Westlake was not ranked last week but debut at No. 4. St. Francis, Hart, and Crespi all dropped out of the poll. In Division IV, Santiago made a jump from No. 7 to No. 5 with their upset win.
