It was an incredible opening weekend of high school football in Louisiana. Fans saw thrilling victories and tough losses, but the biggest news came out of Bossier City with the heartbreaking injury to Parkway senior star quarterback Justin Rogers. Rogers, a TCU commit and Elite 11 Finalist, dislocated his right knee in his team’s opening game against Booker T. Washington. All the action, good and bad, is already shaping the outcome of the 2017 season on the field.

This weekend, one of biggest showcases of high school football talent in the country will be held at Independence Stadium where 10 teams, including Parkway, from six different states will clash in the highly-anticipated Battle on the Border event. The outcomes of each game could shape national rankings and end of the season All-American honors.

Even though there is a big event at Independence Stadium this weekend, there are plenty of other games around the state for fans to enjoy.

Highlighted Week Two Matchups

Evangel Christian Academy Eagles (LA) (1-0) at Allen Eagles (TX) (1-0)

Last weekend, Evangel traveled to Illinois to beat East St. Louis (IL), 14-6, while Allen won a close game at Cedar Hill (TX), 23-8, to begin their respective seasons.

Evangel is led on offense by junior running back Tamauge Sloan, who had 125 rushing yards on 15 carries last week. The lockdown defensive unit is full of talent including defensive tackle Elijah Chatman, who had three tackles and two sacks last week, and linebacker Davin Cotton, a LSU commit, who looks to be at one hundred percent after being pulled from last week’s game with a leg injury.

Allen hasn’t lost a regular season game since 2012 seeking to beat Evangel for the second straight year. They are led on offense by senior running back Brock Sturges, an Arizona State commit, who had 116 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown last week. Eagles’ junior quarterback Grant Tisdale also contributed with 106 passing yards, 45 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown.

Woodlawn Knights (1-0) at Captain Shreve Gators (1-0)

Woodlawn destroyed Carroll, 44-14, while Captain Shreve defeated Green Oaks, 48-20, in Week 1. Both teams are stacked with experienced and talented players setting up an exciting game for fans to watch.

Woodlawn is led by senior running back Trivensky Mosley who has been one of the best players in Shreveport over the last few seasons. Mosley currently has several college offers including Louisiana-Lafayette and Grambling State. Another player to watch on the Knights is Larry Moton, who can make big plays on both sides of the ball.

Captain Shreve is led on offense by the senior tandem of quarterback Lucas Grubb and running back James Ivory III. Ivory rushed for 199 yards last week and will look to put on an encore performance this Friday against Woodlawn. Defensively, the Gators are led by lineman Colyn Givens who has two college offers.

North DeSoto Griffins (1-0) at North Webster Knights (0-1)

Last Friday, North DeSoto dispatched Natchitoches Central, 28-7, while North Webster lost a close game to Haynesville, 19-7.

North DeSoto is led by senior wide receiver Maguire Parker. Parker was recently tabbed as The Shreveport Times Preseason Player of the Year. The 5’11”, 165 pound, playmaker is currently drawing interest from college scouts after a 13 carry- 102 yard and 26 reception- 451 yard with two touchdowns 2016 season.

North Webster is led by senior running back and defensive back TJ Hawthorne, a standout on both sides of the ball. Hawthorne, like Parker, is drawing college interest but is trying to help secure his team’s first win of 2017. The showdown pits the Griffins, a 4A team, against the Knights, a 3A team, making for a potential upset if Hawthorne can lead his team to victory.
