The grind on the California high school football fields are as tough as any other in the nation, if not tougher. It seems as if every roster has at least one Division-I player if not a handful or more making each game a true test and challenge of one’s will to improve or suffer the fate of getting lost in the mayhem. One player that has risen above his peer group is Class of 2018 quarterback Brevin White.

White has been on the recruiting radar since his sophomore season with Alemany High School. During the off-season he transferred to another Los Angeles area school, Chaminade, ready to take the field with another roster set full of talented players. Even with the talents of guys like 2018 running back TJ Pledger (four-star) and 2018 defensive tackle Mykee Irving (four-star) lining the Chaminade roster along with White, finding wins is not always easy to produce. The Eagles have started the 2016 season 3-2 but appear to be finding their collective rhythm at the right time.

In Week 1, Chaminade lost to Oaks Christian 65-55. The shootout was a treat for area high school football fans seeing White square off against USC 2018 quarterback commit Matt Corral. Both players threw for over 300 yards with three touchdowns each in a game to remember. The Eagles Week 5 loss was to traditional powerhouse Serra (Gardena), 30-28, was tough for the Chaminade squad but showed the team heading into the right direction as they enter the heart of their Mission League schedule.

At the midway point of the season, White has thrown for a reported 936 yards with nine touchdowns and has added to his dual-threat abilities covering 134 yards on the ground with another score. Pledger has rushed for 660 yards on 85 totes with 11 scores and has hauled in 12 passes for 157 yards with two more touchdowns. The four-star QB has quickly developed a tight connection with another 2018 rising star, Michael Wilson. Wilson leads the Eagles with 32 receptions, 628 yards, and six touchdowns.

Ahead of Chaminade’s big game against Loyola on Friday night, I sat down with White to get his thoughts on his season so far and received a recruiting news update.

Interview

Brevin, what have been the biggest challenges for you this year on the field?

“The biggest challenge has been feeling a lot more comfortable with coverages and defenses. I can still improve and make quicker reads. I need more sense of urgency when the ball comes out. I have matured a lot on the field over last season. I still think I can work on that and improve.”

What strides have you made from your sophomore to junior year?

“I definitely have gotten stronger in the weight room over the last year. I feel like I can make any throw in a game that is presented. I feel like I can throw any ball needed, touch pass, deep, or on a rope. Getting stronger has helped me a lot. My running ability has improved a lot.

How are you continuing to develop your connection with your receivers during the season?

“We meet every week. I work with the guys every day. We talk throughout the week about the upcoming game. We tell each other what we are seeing on the film. We breakdown film together. On Thursdays we sit down and talk about game day and figure out what it will take to beat that team. I feel like we have the timing and stuff down but we can still improve. The relationship with the guys is strong and it will show throughout the season. I’m proud of all the hard work they are doing.”

You guys have Loyola on Friday, what challenges does their defense present for you?

“They have a bend don’t break defense. They take away the deep ball. Based on the film we saw, they will continue that. They make you throw short and rally to the ball. Seeing that makes us change our game plan some. With Michael Wilson, I throw the ball downfield to him. That is one of the challenges for us. They are a physical team. They have a lot of seniors and upperclassmen. They will come to play. They are a well-coached team. We have to do our thing and be the best team out there tomorrow night.”

Which game has been your best so far?

“I think our season opener against Oaks Christian was my best game.”

Why?

“I feel like I came out hungry in that game. I’m hungry for every game but there was something special with that game especially being on Fox Prep Zone. There was a big crowd and a lot of hype around that game. Oaks is a great team and well-coached. They have D-I guys. That was a great opportunity to be put up against another great team. I came out to play. I made the throws I needed to make, TJ ran well, and the line blocked well. We did not get the win but we played well and put up 55 points.”

Looking over your schedule, there are some big games left but one that may be a little bit bigger than the others for an obvious reason.

“Yeah, there is no way to avoid it, Alemany. I have been thinking about that game since I transferred. Last year I was ready for Chaminade to come to our place. Now I want Alemany at our place. It will be a heated game and a lot of talking going on. It should be a physical game. I am looking forward to getting into that game. I’m excited to go there. I still have friends over there. That game is separate from all the other games for me.”

Which schools do you have offers from right now?

“Arizona State, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, and Utah.”

Which schools are showing interest in you?

“I’m picking up a lot of interest, most of the interest is Pac-12 teams. Cal, UCLA, and Arizona State are coming out more. Some of the east teams like Florida State, Michigan State – I took a visit there this summer and checked out there campus, Tennessee, and Michigan are showing interest. It has been a big turnaround from my sophomore season. Interest is picking up. I have to come out and do my thing and see where the process goes from there.”

Do you have any visits lined up?

“Coach does not allow us to miss Saturday film. I have not taken any visits during game weeks. On a bye week, I went to Arizona State to see the Cal game. This past weekend I went to Arizona State at USC. Having a sibling on the team (Brady White, who is getting playing time, makes me a proud brother for sure.”

How did your Arizona State trip go?

“It was good. They have a new OC from last year. Coach (Chip) Lindsey (quarterbacks coach) is a great guy. We are developing our relationship. It is always good to be out there hanging with the staff to get the game day experience. I spent time with my brother, but more importantly talked to the coaches building that relationship to the future. TJ (Pledger) came with me on the ASU visit against Cal. It was cool to have a teammate with me getting to experience that together.”

How does your brother help you week to week with your game?

“He’s busy but we talk at least once a week. He has more experience. I have always looked at him as role model. I always look to him for advice in different situations. He is the best big brother I could ask for. He is getting more time at ASU. I tell him I am praying for him to do well. Each week we get on a quick call or it could be an hour long conversation. It is nice being able to talk to him. I’m calling him tonight, they play UCLA this week. I’ll give him a ring. We vent about our week and how it is going. That is about it. We stay away from football talk but that is hard for us to not talk football. All brotherly love from him. He is a good big brother for me.”

Are there any college games, besides the obvious, that you are excited to watch this weekend?

“Yeah, pencil me in for that ASU game. I’m really looking forward to that. All the Pac-12 games I like watching. The Pac-12 is the best if not the second best conference in the country. Anytime they have games going on I am watching the Pac-12. I am always watching the games with my mom and dad.”

Have you been surprised by the play of any college football teams this year?

“I’m definitely more focused on the Pac-12. Colorado has surprised me a lot. They beat Oregon and are on a roll this year. The Washington Huskies up in Seattle are doing their thing. I think that was their first win over a Top 5 team (Stanford) in a decade. Coach (Chris) Petersen (head coach) is doing big things up there. Those two teams have been the most shocking to me this year. We have film on Saturday until 1:00, I’ve missed a lot of them.

Louisville, shocking me and I want to watch them play. They have sent some letters too.”

Brevin, good luck with the rest of your season and thanks for your time today.

“Thank you.”
