American Heritage was not just the high school team to beat in the state of Florida in 2016 but proved to be a monster against out of state competition downing Georgia powerhouse Colquitt County and New Jersey stalwart Don Bosco Prep on the way to a 14-0 season. The Patriots were loaded with talent on both sides of the ball but one of the Class of 2018 standouts that helped make the season a perfect one was all-purpose back Miles Jones.

Jones was that silky smooth runner capable of making a defense look silly on the ground and out of the backfield as a weapon in the passing game. He also lined up in the slot creating mismatches with linebackers, nickel backs, and safeties. The 5-8, 172 pound, talent rushed for 585 yards off 67 carries with five touchdowns. His yard per carry mark, 8.7, was tops on the team with players having 13 or more carries. His rushing yardage was also second best on the team.

In the passing attack, Jones pulled in 28 passes for 405 yards, second best on the team, with a score. Another area where Jones can be an impact player is on special teams. Teams unwisely kicked to him 12 times seeing the ball go back the other way for 325 yards with a long of 88 yards.

The speed and ability Jones has in the open field to move the chains and put points up on the board have caught college coaches’ attention. Six teams have offered so far with Mississippi State, West Virginia, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, and Georgia ready to maximize his skill set at the next level. Interest is coming in from other schools prompting a three-school tour over the weekend hitting the Notre Dame campus on Jan. 27, Ohio State on Jan. 28, and TCU on Jan. 29.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Jones after his whirlwind campus tour to find out how the trip turned out.

Interview

Miles you just got back from a big trip. Which schools did you visit?

“Notre Dame, Ohio State, and TCU.”

We’ll go one-by-one. How did the Notre Dame trip go?

“It was great. What caught me about Notre Dame was their academics. I toured the campus and met with their offensive coordinator (Chip Long) and running backs coach (Autry Denson) one-on-one with each for 30 minutes. They like me. They said they would use me out of the backfield catching the ball and on special teams. Visiting Notre Dame was a great experience being up there for the first time.”

How did Ohio State go?

“It went well. OSU is really nice. I liked the city around their campus. The campus is big and nice. The coaches were nice too. I met with Coach (Zach) Smith (recruiting coordinator), he’s their wide receivers coach, one-on-one. He talked to me about how they teach their receivers. Their running backs coach, Coach (Tony) Alford, said they like me a lot but they are still evaluating me in the process.”

And how about TCU?

“TCU has a very nice campus. The facilities are top notch. Their defensive line coach, Coach (Zarnell) Fitch, said he likes me a lot. He said he would offer me know if he were the wide receivers coach. The wide receivers coach, Coach (Rusty) Burns, said he likes me but they are still looking at me.”

Which position are each of the schools recruiting you to play?

“Notre Dame is looking at me at running back, some slot, and as a return guy. OSU is looking at me in the slot and as a return guy and TCU is looking at me in the slot and on returns.”

Do you have any upcoming visits planned?

“Not as of right now. I’m doing track now. I will work some visits in around track here and there if I can or I will just wait until after the season.”

What other schools are showing recruiting interest in you?

“Iowa State is showing a little bit of interest but I have not talked to them too much. I know they have asked about me. Florida State has called my coach twice to ask about me. Iowa, Kentucky, and Navy have also been showing some interest in me.”

You picked up Georgia’s offer on Jan. 16. Which coach presented you with the offer and how did they do that?

“Coach James Coley, he is the wide receivers coach for Georgia. I went to Georgia in the summer. I talked to Coach Coley then. We have stayed in touch. A couple of weeks ago he came to school. We talked then and later on they offered me.”

What was it like getting the offer from Georgia?

“It was really exciting that is a big SEC offer. It is great to get a big time offer like that. We have been in touch for a while now. I feel like they want me a lot.”

When track season is over, are you planning on attending any college camps?

“I’m trying to go to a Georgia, a Vanderbilt, and an Ohio State camp and maybe FSU in the summer. Those are the ones I am thinking about going to right now.”

How are your off-season workouts going so far?

“They are going great. Because I am running track it is hard to get in the weight room. I lift after practice two to three times a week. I’m getting stronger, bigger, and faster.”

Which events in track are you going to run?

“The 400, 4×4, 4×2, and I am an alternate for 4×1 if someone gets hurt.”

That is a lot. Good luck with all of that.

“Thank you.”

In general, what will you be watching for on National Signing Day 2017?

“I will look at which receivers and running backs commit to the different schools. I will look to see if that school would be a good fit for me depending on how many receivers or running backs they sign.”

Miles, thanks for your time today and good luck with your track season.

“Thank you.”
