Playing behind senior quarterback Jaelen Brown at Walter Williams High School (Burlington, NC) during the 2022 season, Dan Mahan (6-2, 185) laid down the foundation of great things to come. Through an 8-4 season, the Bulldogs were able to get meaningful reps for their 2025 dual threat setting a big stage. The anticipation for the upcoming season has grown as Mahan awed college coaches during his camp tour picking up six Division-I scholarships.

The offer list was run down by Mahan, “Liberty, Miami-Ohio, all at camps, James Madison, Charlotte, Boston College, and App State.”

At each stop interest and offers were picked up seeing Mahan rise on recruiting boards.

“Every camp I went to this year, I picked up interest from those schools,” Mahan said. “UVA (Virginia), Wake Forest is showing a lot of interest, I have been there, NC State, (North) Carolina, and Maryland has shown some. I am going to Penn State later this month. ECU (East Carolina) and Coastal Carolina are showing interest as well. A lot of teams came by for spring ball, they’ve been showing an effort to recruit me.”

Insight into the camp schedule was given, “I camped with the schools that have interest in me. We stayed local. I went to Duke to start the year out, that is where Miami-Ohio offered, and then to Wake Forest; James Madison offered there. NC State is where Charlotte offered me and then Boston College offered later that day. At App State, they offered me at their camp, and then Liberty rounded it out offering me.

“I went to the Showtime Camp in Carolina. It was great. It was amazing. There was great competition there, the best guys from North Carolina, Georgia, and all over. I had a fun time, ate, and hung out with the coaches. It was great.”

Where he spun it best was covered.

“I’d say App State,” Mahan shared. “That is where my brother goes to school. They have shown a lot of interest. They had a lot of 2024s there; they were all battling it out for a commit-able offer. I went out there and showed out with those guys the whole time. There were a lot of eyes on me, it was really cool.”

There are two more possible stops this summer before full attention turns back to the Bulldogs’ upcoming season.

“I am going to Penn State at the end of the month for their cookout,” Mahan said. “The Alpha Pack (NC State) is coming up. I went to that last year; I may go to that. They just got a 2025 commit there, we’ll see how that goes.”

A fall travel schedule is being tentatively planned.

“I know I am going to an App State game; I am excited for that,” Mahan stated. “They have a great atmosphere. I am going to a Wake Forest game and probably to a (NC) State game. The local schools I have always gone to. It is always fun going to those games. I would like to get to a Penn State game, if possible for the White Out game. It has been a life dream to go to one of those games. I plan to get to a Liberty game; I’ve never been but have always wanted to go. My dad’s dream school as a kid was Liberty.”

Last season, Mahan completed 65 percent of his passes covering 342 yards with two touchdowns avoiding an interception. On the ground, he rushed 18 times for 213 yards with four trips into the end zone. The Bulldogs’ style of offense was detailed.

“We have a set called Power Raid,” Mahan shared. “It is an RPO (run-pass option) based offense. We also run Spread, four verts (vertical). At times I will be alone in the backfield, with a running back in the gun running RPOs, and stuff like that.”

Getting additional offseason reps with former Duke QB Anthony Boone in Charlotte, Mahan spoke about how he is improving upon his skillset.

“I am working on my footwork mainly,” Mahan said. “I played receiver a little bit; I have the running ability. I’ve been working on my footwork in the pocket, making off-platform throws, and things like that. We work on next level throws and footwork drills, which is big for me.”
