At any skill position on the gridiron, there really is not much Darnay Holmes cannot do with the football in his hands, with it in the air, or with the opposition holding onto it for dear life. Holmes put extra meaning to the word athlete in 2015 catching 55 passes for 886 yards with 10 touchdowns and carried the ball 34 times for 242 yards with three more touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, the California talent came up with 23 solo tackles, 31 total, picked off two passes and defended 10 when quarterbacks tried to test him.

Equally as impressive was Holmes’ (5-11, 185) ability to showcase his speed and illusiveness in the open field on special teams with 343 punt return yards off 12 attempts with a 78-yard touchdown and 213 kick return yards off just five tries with a 95-yard touchdown.

College coaches from all over the country want the Calabasas 5-star Class of 2017 recruit at their school. The list is long and impressive with Ohio State, Alabama, Stanford, UCLA, Arizona, Clemson, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Cal, Tennessee, Oregon, Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Utah, Washington, Texas A&M, and Notre Dame, among a lot of others.

Holmes has that anywhere and at any time kind of attitude when it comes to football. Not only can he talk the talk but he can walk the walk. In a Recruiting New Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Holmes to go over his upcoming offseason schedule and received an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Darnay, last time we spoke was at the Nike Opening regional in Los Angeles (Feb. 28). Then you said you were planning on going to the Nike Opening regional in Atlanta to take on east coast talent. Is that still in the plans?

“That was the plan to go to Atlanta. Right now I am setting up visits. I’m going to Arizona coming up and I’m going to Stanford on the 25th. As of right now, those are the only set visits. UCLA is getting one and some out of state visits. They’ll be big. I’m not sure if I am going to Atlanta now or not.”

Are you going to camp at any colleges?

“I might go to a few camps and get coached up by maybe a future coach. Right now I’m focused on the 2016 season with my team and I. I’m focused on our team goals.”

What are you working on in offseason?

“Every Tuesday my dad has a hill for us to run. We do some speed work on the turf too. Every day I’m working with my trainer to get my body control down without injury. I work out with my defensive back coach almost every day.”

Did you run the 40-yard dash at the Nike camp?

“I did not test at the Nike camp.”

What is the best 40-yard dash time you’ve laid down?

“I have not ran a 40 since my freshman year, honestly. My real 40 time, I could not tell you.”

You just now it’s fast right?

(Laughs) “Yeah. This summer I’m wanting to run a 4.3. That’s my goal.”

Which schools are pushing hard for you right now?

“Right now Stanford, UCLA, Ohio State, Nebraska, Florida, and Michigan are coming at me hard. A lot of schools are coming harder as they start looking at their boards and have time to shoot out DM’s telling me to give me a call. Those are the main schools.”

Has your Top 7 of Alabama, Nebraska, UCLA, Washington, Ohio State, Stanford, and Arizona remained just that, those seven schools?

“Yes.”

When is your announcement date?

“It’s set for June 23, my birthday. If I don’t feel that comfortability with the school I want, I’ll push it back.”

What is your GPA right now?

“I have a 3.9.”

Have you taken the ACT or SAT yet?

“No. I’m doing the practice tests and studying. I am taking my tests coming up soon.”

Are you running track for Calabasas still?

“Yeah, I have a track meet on Thursday. My first of the year.”

Which events are you participating in this year?

“The 4×1, 4×4, 200, and 100.”

Darnay, good luck with your upcoming visits and your track meet on Thursday.

“Thank you.”
