Another exciting week of California high school football is in the books. The top teams in Division-I stayed intact with Mater Dei extending their lead over the pack after beating then- No. 2 Bishop Gorman 35-21 in a nationally televised game. The week sets up for another shakeup with No. 2 St. John Bosco hosting No. 5 Chaminade on Sept. 8.

Serra dropped out of the Top 10 after an 0-2 start making room for Santa Margarita in the Division-I rankings. The Santa Margarita Eagles have been impressive on both sides of the ball so far this year topping Downey 56-0 and Loyola 35-0. The Eagles get Alemany in Week 3. The Cavaliers may be 0-2 on the year but have taken on two very tough teams in Narbonne and Punahou (Honolulu, HI), both tightly contested games. The Cavs dropped the opener to Narbonne 17-14 and the Puff n’ Blue 56-42.

The big movement of the week was Valencia taking over the No. 1 spot in Division-II rankings with Edison falling from No. 1 to No. 4. La Habra joined the rankings at No. 9. The Valencia Vikings defeated Palmdale 49-9 earning the jump while setting up a big showdown this weekend against visiting Scottsdale (AZ) Chaparral High School. After Edison escaped Tesoro in Week 1, the Chargers ran into an angry Oaks Christian squad losing 24-19 in a hard-fought game.

Charter Oak is the new No. 1 team in Division-III seeing Rancho Verde slide to No. 3. St. Francis joined the rankings jumping all the way to No. 5. Charter Oak knocked Colony out of the Top 10 with a 45-21 win over the Ontario squad. The Chargers get Glendora in Week 3. In Division-IV, Capistrano Valley moved from No. 9 to No. 2 after beating La Mirada 23-7 to open the year 2-0. A road trip to San Juan Hills is up next for the Cougars.

The biggest movement in Division-V was previously unranked Paramount landing at No. 5. The Pirates opened the season with a loss to Mission Hills but bounced back to beat previously ranked Buena Park 40-13. Next up for the Pirates is Long Beach’s Jordan High School. In Division-VI, Bishop Diego is the new No. 1 squad moving Saugus to No. 3 with Golden Valley holding the No. 2 spot. The Cardinals moved to No. 1 after beating Las Vegas based Desert Pines in Week 1 and then topping Arroyo Grande 42-14 over the weekend.
