All attention in California will be focused on Centennial High School once the 2016 season begins. The Huskies made a run to the state championship game last season but could arguably have more talent on the roster this season than a year ago. One of the many truly talented players lining the roster is Class of 2017 wide receiver Troy Spencer.

Spencer flexed his big play potential among a bevy of upperclassmen stealing the spotlight when he could averaging 22.7 yards per reception hauling in 22 passes covering 501 yards with six scores. Recruiting interest has come in from all over with teams like Washington, Cal, Northern Arizona, San Jose State, Southern Utah, UC Davis, Cal-Poly, Army, Boise State, UNLV, and Washington State, among others, learning more about one of southern California’s most overlooked recruits.

With a loaded roster and national attention focused on the Corona squad, no one on the Huskies roster can take a break in the offseason resting on natural talent hoping that will carry them through the grind of another tough football schedule. Spencer has been active as anyone in the offseason both with supervised school workouts and at various camps working on perfecting and honing his craft. In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with Spencer after he competed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Academy in Canton (OH) to get an update on his offseason.

Interview

Troy, I know you have been busy this summer. Which camps have you attended so far?

“I’ve been to a Nevada and Arizona camp, a Utah and UNLV camp, a UC Davis camp, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame Academy.”

How did the Nevada and Arizona camp go for you?

“That was the best performance at a camp I have ever done. I got their attention. I think they will be more interested in me during the season.”

What were some of the things that you did well at that camp that caught their attention?

“The most positive thing that got everyone’s attention, they tested my 40-yard dash time. I had the fastest of the day.”

What did you run?

“I ran a 4.46.”

Very nice. That is sure to catch a lot of attention. How did the Utah and UNLV camp go?

“That was another testing camp. I did not have the fastest time there, a JUCO guy beat me. I ran a 4.49 there. I ran nice routes in one-on-ones too. I think that helped me out a lot.”

Running a 4.49 is nothing to hang your head about. That’s great. How did the invite to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Academy come to you?

“One of the coaches at the academy was my youth coach. My teammate Jaylan Shaw and I were invited to go up there to compete for the week.”

How did the camp go?

“That camp was fun. I was coached by some NFL coaches and former players. They taught me how they want players to run routes. They taught me a lot. I will apply all of that to my game.”

What were some of the differences they changed in your game?

“A big difference was not covering myself by my alignment so I can get open faster. That was one of the biggest things for me. They taught me how to disguise everything, how to read defenders better seeing if they are light or heavy, and all of that stuff.”

Do you have any visits or camps coming up?

“No more camps but I am taking a visit to UC-Davis next Friday (July 22).”

What all are you planning to do during your visit?

“We’ll get there on Friday so we can be there Saturday morning to watch them practice and go through drills. Hopefully I can workout for them if possible. We plan on doing a tour of the campus and seeing all of the facilities while we are there.”

What are some of the things you are wanting to learn about UC-Davis during your visit?

“They have the most prestigious school in their league – that is a plus for me. I want to see their environment. I’m really excited to check all of that out.”

Which schools have been showing recruiting interest in you lately?

“Southern Utah, Portland State, Washington, Washington State, UNLV, Boise State, Cal-Poly, Army, and Northern Arizona.”

Which schools do you have offers from right now?

“UC-Davis, KCU (Kentucky Christian), and Lake Erie.”

How are your offseason workouts going?

“The workouts are going well. I’m doing a lot of route running working on my speed as well. I lift with the team but not as much lifting on my own. On my own I’ve been focusing on my route running and speed.”

How is the team looking so far through summer workouts?

“We are looking strong. I think we will be the best team out there.”

Troy, thanks for your time today and good luck with your UC Davis visit.

“Thank you.”
