Cisco QB Richard Lagow talks unofficial visit with USC Trojans

Written by Ryan Wright

One of the fastest rising quarterback prospects out of the JUCO ranks for the 2016 recruiting class is Cisco signal caller Richard Lagow. Lagow originally signed with UConn out of Plano Senior High School as part of the 2013 recruiting class, went through fall camp with the Huskies, but then walked on at Oklahoma State redshirting that fall.

Now the 6’6”, 240 pound, gunslinger is getting looks from all across the country after throwing for 2,900 yards with 29 touchdowns during his redshirt freshman season for the Wranglers. Over the weekend he helped improve his stock working out for Pac-12 Conference coaches at the Paragon Showcase in Los Angeles on the USC Trojans campus.

I caught up with Richard after the camp and his visit to USC to find out how well he showed out at the showcase and how to get his thoughts on his visit of the Trojans facilities.

Richard, how did the visit to USC go?

“It was great, the place was amazing. It was awesome. I had a good talk with Coach (Clay) Helton (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach). I’m supposed to keep talk to him.”

Did you get a chance to meet Coach Steve Sarkisian?

“I did meet him, talked to him while I was there.”

What are you and Coach Helton supposed to talk about when you get on your next call?

“I’m really not sure. He said he wants to talk to me once a week and continue to have communication until everything gets figured out.”

What all did they say to you about your skill set?

“He said he loved me. They liked my tape a lot. I got to throw for them in person at that camp I was at, that showcase. He said he loves what I do. He thinks I can spin the ball as good as any quarterback out there. He’s pulling for me kind of thing. He’s going to try to help me out.”

Do you think an offer call from USC is coming?

“I don’t think it’ll be an offer call when I talk to him this week but obviously I have hopes that eventually, if they need a quarterback, that I’d be in their conversation. I think short term it is more of a keep the relationship going and build. I’ve talked to him a few times. Even if I don’t get to play for him I’d still like to talk to him more and more and get to know him.”

You were in Los Angeles for a showcase, what was the showcase called?

“It was called Camp Paragon but on by Body by Tra. It was USC, Arizona State, and Washington. They had staff from all those schools there.”

Did you get a chance to talk to the ASU or Washington coaches while at the camp?

“Yes sir, I did really well at the camp. All the coaches afterwards were talking to me. Arizona State said they would be in contact as well.”

Breakdown your camp performance for us.

“I think I did the best out of all the quarterbacks there. I think, I’m not trying to sound arrogant or anything but, my performance was better than anybody there and I think the coaches saw that and recognized that. They were real supportive of me. They would say things like “great throw” and “good job.” I feel real good about how I did.”

How many quarterback were there?

“There were about 15 or so there maybe a little more.”

When you were on the USC campus what all did you get to see and tour?

“They showed me everything, all the locker rooms, the lobby, all the offices, the meeting rooms, and all of that stuff. I didn’t get to see the stadium. They were in the middle of a camp also when I was there so – Coach Helton wasn’t able to come with me when I did my tour but he talked to me before the tour and then after the tour. It was pretty neat.”

What was your overall impression of the campus and facilities?

“It was beautiful. The palm trees all around the campus. All the buildings look brand new, I don’t know if they’re all new but they look brand new. They do a great job of taking care of the facilities. At their facilities you walk in and they those big marble stairs that lead up to the TVs. It blew me away when I first saw it. You have to look at it and appreciate it because a lot of places don’t have stuff like that.”

Have you made any plans to come back out to LA to visit the campus?

“Maybe, but as of right now no. I might be back out there for a couple of other schools.”
