Across the nation, high school athletes of all grade classifications are preparing for what many hope to be a magical season. One of the many immensely talented California teams entering the 2016 schedule with high hopes is Colony High School. One of the players ready to start separating himself from his peer group from raw potential to dynamic playmaker is Michael Ezeike.

Ezeike received some playing time during his sophomore season at both wide receiver and cornerback. Playing wide receiver may still be in the cards but the budding talent has essentially outgrown playing corner. The now 6’5”, 210 pound, Ontario area product could end up being a defensive end or linebacker on the other side of the ball as his body continues to develop.

Ezeike caught our eye during an Airo Nation 7v7 tournament at Redondo Union High School. The next level eye spotting Ezeike’s potential talent includes Michigan, Arizona State, and Southern Utah among others.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up Ezeike in the middle of his camp season (June 23) to get an update on his offseason, workouts, and recruiting interest.

Interview

Michael, what does your camp schedule look like going forward?

“The coaches from Dixie State want to see me at their camp on Friday at Centennial High School (Corona).”

Which camps have you attended so far?

“I went to a UNLV and Utah camp.”

How did the Utah camp go?

“It went great. I talked to some coaches there.”

What were some of the things the coaches worked with you on at the camp?

“They wanted me to get my head towards the ball in open space as a receiver quicker. They worked one-on-one with me a lot.”

What were some of the things you did well during that camp?

“I did well during the one-on-ones. I did not drop any balls. I was doing some good things there. The coaches were telling me my ball skills were really good.”

I bet there were no problems for you getting off the line if a defensive back was trying to jam you.

(Laughs) “No. I had no problems there.”

Have you gone to any exposure camps?

“I went to the Sound Mind Sound Body (SMSB) camp (Whittier). There were a lot of colleges there. One of the Wyoming coaches talked to me there. He said they like me.”

What were some of the things you did well at the SMSB camp?

“It was a good camp overall. I listened to what they coaches were telling me to do and what they had to say on improving at my position. I did well in the one-on-ones there too. It was tough though, I only got three reps.”

You mentioned Dixie State, what other camps do you have on the schedule for July?

“I’m going to an Oregon camp in July. Other colleges have been contacting so we’ll see if I attend any others.”

Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you right now?

“Michigan, Arizona State, Southern Utah, Wyoming, Dixie State, and Utah said they would be on the lookout for me.”

How are your offseason workouts going?

“Our workouts are going well – the Colony workouts are intense. The workouts are helping mature my body. One of the coaches told me the other day I was looking more like a defensive end because of my body filling out.”

What kind of speed and agility drills have you been doing?

“My receiver coach helps me a lot with my agility drills. I can tell my speed is improving. We run a lot of ladder drills, parachutes, and stadium steps. We do a lot of footwork and speed drills too.”

Have you ran a 40-yard dash at any of the camps?

“No. But I did run a shuttle in 4.6.”

That’s great. Thanks for your time today Michael and good luck with the upcoming camps.

“Thank you.”
