Conway QB Breylin Smith readies to showcase talent at college summer camps

Conway Wampus Cats quarterback Breylin Smith has proved his worth on the Arkansas high school gridirons but is now positioning himself for an influential summer filled with one-day college camps. Over the course of the next several weeks the 6’3”, 190 pound, gunslinger who threw for over 2,000 yards with 20 touchdowns against just five picks as a junior in 2014 will give college coaches a first hand look at his skill set in hopes of securing a Division-I scholarship offer.

Teams like Arkansas, Arkansas State, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Stanford, Texas, Oklahoma State, Notre Dame, Auburn, Missouri, Tulsa, and Memphis have all shown interest in Smith with Central Arkansas extending an early offer to the talent from their immediate backyard.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview we sat down with Breylin to go over his camp schedule, unofficial visits already taken, and how he is preparing to showcase his talents to college recruiters.

Breylin, you’ve been on a couple of unofficial visits to schools like Oklahoma State and Memphis. How did the OSU visit go?

“Oklahoma State was great. It was really nice there. I liked their facilities a lot. I got to sit in a meeting with the QB coach (Mike Yurcich). I liked it a lot.”

How did the Memphis visit go?

“It was nice too, kind of the same thing as OSU. I got to sit in on a meeting with the QB coach (Brad Cornelsen). I got to go through the film they have, that was fun.”

You have a lot of schools showing interest in you. Where all will you camp this summer?

“I’m going to Tulsa on May 31, Arkansas State, Missouri, UCA (Central Arkansas), and Oklahoma State. I’m looking at attending camps at Louisville, Auburn, and Arkansas.”

Are you looking forward to camping at Arkansas State?

“I’m very excited about Arkansas State. I’m just ready to go to the camps and see how everything goes from there.”

What have you been working on in the offseason to prepare for the summer camps? Have you been making any tweaks to your mechanics?

“I really haven’t changed anything. My three-step drops were way to fast. I was getting back too far. I’m working on accuracy. Instead of being at 59 percent I’m moving up to 70 percent. I’m just tightening all the little things up.”

Are you working with a quarterback coach to get your form and drops consistent?

“I’m working with Clint Stoerner (Arkansas 1996-2000, Dallas Cowboys 2000-2003, Miami Dolphins 2004).”

Where are you working with Stoerner?

“I go down to Little Rock, to D-I. It’s a little training facility. Athletes go there to lift weights, run, they have batting cages there, and an indoor turf football field.”

Working on any other tweaks to your mechanics with Stoerner?

“My release point. He wants me to keep it in the window. I’m snapping it out of the same window so it comes out hotter. I’m throwing it harder, not using all arm. I was wild early on, now I’m using more of my left side when I throw.”

Good luck on the college camp circuit.

“Thank you.”
