Duke Wraps Up Three Memorial Day Weekend Commits

The Blue Devils made a big push forward with their 2017 recruiting class over Memorial Day weekend landing three commitments. The festivities started on Friday with South Carolina safety Lummie Young and rolled through to Sunday with Georgia athlete Joshua Blackwell and Texas wide receiver Gavin Holmes on Monday.

Duke landing Young was a big win pulling him away from South Carolina. They 6’2”, 188 pound, talent also had offers from Cal, North Carolina State, Miami (Ohio), Costal Carolina, Charlotte, Old Dominion, Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest.

Blackwell is a highly prized recruit Duke landed over roughly 20 other programs. Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Iowa State, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Rutgers, North Carolina, and Penn State all put offers on the table for the Buford High School standout. Blackwell is listed as an athlete after playing running back and cornerback for Buford.

Holmes is another big time win for the Blue Devils. The Northwest High School star had a breakout junior season pulling in 59 passes for 817 yards with eight touchdowns. The Lone Star State product saw his offer sheet blow up in May with teams like Boise State, Kansas, Harvard, Wisconsin, Air Force, Iowa, and Duke (May 13) making contact. Other top teams to offer included Wisconsin, BYU, Army, Cornell, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tulane, Colorado State, and Utah.

The Blue Devils now have 11 verbal commitments to their 2017 recruiting class. All 11 are considered three-star recruits.
