BRADENTON, Fla. – As good and consistent as Jordon Johnson-Rubell is on the field, he is that and then some off it. The four-star safety has been a straight shooter with his recruiting narrowing down his 30-plus offers to an elite list of Power Five programs. Four official visits have been set with in-season paid for trips as a possibility if the ideal spot is not found in June.

The IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) defender released his top schools in January: Oregon, Texas, TCU, USC, Oklahoma, Florida State, Arizona State, Alabama, Colorado, Ole Miss, Wisconsin, and Penn State.

Part of that listing has been paired down to four officials.

“My four official visits are with Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, and USC,” Johnson-Rubell said.

Johnson-Rubell broke down his interest in the four programs.

THE BREAKDOWN

Michigan: “Coach (Jay) Harbaugh (DB), he’s definitely a great coach. I was in their film room watching film with him for about two hours, he was telling me the ups and downs of how I play; he can make me better.”

Ohio State: “Coach (Perry) Eliano (DB), he’s from the Texas area, we have a great connection there. I feel Ohio State has the best receivers in the nation; guarding them in practice every day will make me better.

Texas: “Coach (Blake) Gideon (DB), he has been recruiting me since I was a freshman. We have a great relationship. He’s a Texas guy; Texas guys are important.”

USC: “Coach Donte (Williams – DB) and coach (Lincoln) Riley. I was a big Oklahoma guy with coach Riley there, now I’m a big USC guy. I feel like they are building a great program out west.”

The set dates for the visits were listed, “I am going to USC June 1-3, Ohio State 8-10, Michigan 15-17, and Texas 23-25.”

More teams could get Johnson-Rubell on campus for official visits, but those trips would have to wait until the 2023 college football season gets going.

“There are definitely contenders,” Johnson-Rubell said. “Alabama is a contender, TCU is definitely a contender, Florida State, and Colorado.”

Asked if the four teams locked for official visits are his top schools, Johnson-Rubell replied, “No. I haven’t dropped my top schools yet, those are just the schools I have locked in for official visits.”

Development and education will be at the heart of Johnson-Rubell’s final decision.

“I am looking at which school gives me the best player development, which school can develop me for the next step, and which school is the best for education.”
