BRADENTON, Fla. – A hard-hitting linebacker that can cover ground is a wanted commodity at the collegiate level. At Vero Beach High School (Fla.), the Indians have one in Tarvos Alford (6-1.5, 215). The four-star presence in the box ended 103 plays last fall while suiting up with John Carroll Catholic; 28 teams have requested Alford’s skills during his college days. A recent visit was taken to Ohio State with one set at the end of July to Georgia.

In mid-June, the Buckeyes hosted Alford in Columbus.

“It was great,” Alford said. “Being around coach (Jim) Knowles (DC/LB), coach (James) Laurinaitis (GA), and coach (Ryan) Day, it was really great.”

Alford continued, “Coach Knowles told me he likes my versatility, how I can play inside the box and how I can play in space.”

The next planned stop takes Alford into SEC country.

“I am going to Georgia on July 28,” Alford stated. “I’m very excited. They have a rich program winning national championships back-to-back. I’d love to get up there.”

The time in Athens will help draw player and coaches closer together.

“It is building right now,” Alford shared. “I wouldn’t say it is a great relationship, but we are building it right now.”

Looking to the fall months, there are a few possible game-day visits for Alford.

“I haven’t made any dates official yet, but I know I am taking a visit to Ohio State, Tennessee, Florida, and Miami,” Alford said.

The Volunteers’ constant communication has the defender ready to head to Knoxville.

“Mainly how much they communicate with me, and they are always trying to get me up there,” Alford stated. “I can’t make it all the time.”

The rapport with the Hurricanes in South Florida is there for Alford thanks in large part to linebackers coach Derek Nicholson.

“Our relationship is great,” Alford shared. “Coach Nicholson and I talk once a week – it is great.”

If the game-day visit happens, Alford was asked what is important to experience during that trip.

“I feel that I got a great feel for Miami the first two times I visited,” Alford said. “The more visits I take down there hanging around their coaches is helping build that relationship.”

June was a busy month for Alford. In addition to competing at Under Armour’s Future 50 at IMG Academy, he also drew offers from Ole Miss, Syracuse, Louisville, Troy, and Florida State.
