Kansas City is home to some great high school football programs with battles on the border happening every season. This is the case even more so in 2020 as the coronavirus has wreaked havoc on scheduling for schools in both states of the Kansas-Missouri border. Despite the craziness, one rivalry game will still be played as the Rockhurst Hawklets out of Missouri will travel across the state line to battle the Bishop Miege Stags. Both teams are among the best in their respective states as Rockhurst has won five state championships and Bishop Miege has won ten state titles including the last six in Kansas 4A.

Rockhurst

The Hawklets have started the 2020 season 2-2, including blowing out Blue Springs South (36-14) on Sept. 18. The playmaker on both sides of the ball for Rockhurst is senior Cashius Howell (6’4”, 220), who has rushed for over 450 yards and has five touchdowns on offense while also coming up with big plays on defense including eight sacks. Senior quarterback Bobby Hummel is the man under center for Rockhurst. The 6’1”, 180-pound, signal caller threw for 117 yards and one touchdown last Friday.

The offensive line is anchored by three-star lineman Brett Harris (6’6”, 285). Two other players who are featured on both sides of the ball are AJ Frazier (6’3”, 325) and Johnny Pascuzzi (6’4”, 205). Frazier plays on both the defensive and offensive line while Pascuzzi plays tight end and defensive end. In Friday’s win, Pascuzzi had a 35-yard touchdown reception and a 41-yard interception return for a score.

Bishop Miege

The Stags opened their 2020 campaign by suffering a heartbreaking 41-35 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday. The leader of this explosive offense is senior quarterback Timothy Dorsey, who is committed to Illinois State. In Friday’s game, the 6’0”, 185-pound, passer threw for 303 yards and had four total touchdowns.

Tight end Mack Moeller (6’3”, 200) also put on a show by snagging 10 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Trey Ausler (6’1”, 170) also made some plays as he caught seven passes for 70 yards. One of the big men to watch on the offensive line is senior Nathan Smith (6’3”, 260). Junior Collin Williams (6’4”, 240) makes plays at both linebacker and defensive end for this Bishop Miege defense. An athlete to watch in the Stags secondary is junior safety Jaylen Burch (5’8”, 160), who makes big tackles all over the field and makes plays in the running game as he scampered for a 22-yard score against St. Thomas Aquinas.

Overview

Both sidelines are full of future college football recruits and both teams will be looking to win another round in this historic rivalry between two Kansas City area programs. Fans of both the Hawklets and Stags will not want to miss this brutal battle on the border.
