The Cougars added another Lone Star State recruit to the 2017 class after receiving a pledge from dual-threat quarterback Bryson Smith on Friday.

Smith got some snaps for Tyler High School during the 2014 season but got a chance to show what he can do in the pocket for the Lions during his junior campaign. Smith tore up 5A area competition passing for 2,415 yards connecting for 20 touchdowns against six picks. He showed his athleticism leading the team in rushing with 1,421 yards finding the end zone 21 more times helping the Lions to an 8-4 record.

Houston landed Smith over offers from eight other schools. The programs seeking Bryson’s skill set includes Texas-San Antonio, SMU, North Texas, Texas State, Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette, Bowling Green, and New Mexico.

Smith’s commitment was posted on Twitter reading, “Excited To Announce That I Am Committed To THE University of Houston!! #GoCoogs #HTownTakeover.”

Houston now has nine verbal commitments to their 2017 class. The class has been balanced so far with five on offense and four on defense. Smith’s commitment ends a dry spell for Houston on the recruiting trail. The staff had picked up just three commitments in 2016 with all three coming in April; Parker Eichenberger, Devin Miller, and Adam Beck.
