The Fighting 59ers of Andrean High School had a great season as they finished 11-2 and reached the state quarterfinals. The driving force behind their success was a defense that only gave up 12 points a game. One of the leaders of this force was junior linebacker, Dh’Mari Wright.

This 6’4”, 215-pound, defender finished his junior campaign with 44 total tackles, six sacks, three fumble recoveries, and one defensive touchdown. Wright has good size and strength and has a great ability to move side to side to make tackles and disrupt opposing offenses.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with Dh’Mari to talk about his successful junior season.

Interview

How would you grade your individual performance in your junior season?

I would say I had a pretty good junior year because I had a big transition from being a defensive back my sophomore year to an outside linebacker a couple of weeks before our first game against one of the top football teams in Indiana.

What are your strengths on the football field?

I would say one of my strengths is my physicality and speed to get to the ball carrier.

What would you say was your best game this season and why?

My best game was against Lake Central, because that’s when I realized I wanted to go to the next level for football. After watching the film on that game, I saw I can really mess up an offensive scheme.

How would you describe what kind of player you are?

I’m a very destructive player on the field. I will not let someone get in my way to make plays.

How would you describe what kind of teammate you are?

I hype all my teammates up and at practice I always try to help the younger kids at their positions and push them to always get better.

Did you face any challenges this season?

For a couple of games, I was not really focused because of things at home going on.

How did you overcome these challenges?

I got through this by taking all of my anger out on the field and just being with and having fun with my teammates.

How do your skills translate to your team’s defensive scheme?

I’m very physical and with my limited speed I can’t let the running back or quarterback out of my sight. I do a good job of containing the opposition.

What is one area of your game that you saw the most improvement in over the course of the season?

Something I saw this year was my ability to be a leader since next year I will be a senior. I want to try and leave a legacy so everyone remembers me as a leader and someone who brings it every day.

Do you play any other sports in high school?

I also play basketball and baseball.

What are your goals for your senior season?

I want to lead my team as far as we can go since we are losing a lot of talent this year. I want to make the best out of the situation.

What is your GPA?

3.0.

Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?

My favorite Bible verse is Deuteronomy 31:6.
