Class of 2019 slot receiver/running back Tyler McNair started making a name for himself in the Louisiana high school ranks during his sophomore season. Then with Southern University Lab, McNair (5-7, 178) was a key contributor to the Kittens 14-1 championship season. When the lights go on for the 2018 season, McNair will be applying his trade as a do-everything playmaker for Broadmoor High School taking on 5A competition. Ahead of his highly anticipated senior year, McNair put his talents to the test at the Dallas Nike Opening Regional on Sunday. Covering his offseason workouts and camp performance, I got a quick interview in with the one to watch rising talent.

Interview

Tyler, are we going to see you at multiple positions during your senior year?

“I will start at slot receiver but I will also play some running back and I will be back on kick returns. I’m not sure about punt return yet. The coaches have me doing a lot of reverses and jet sweeps this year. I’m excited.”

What are you working on this offseason to prepare for the 2018 schedule?

“I am mostly working on my hands. I am making sure I can catch everything. I have average height for slot receiver so I have to make sure I show my great hands, quick feet, my speed, my good agility and my quickness out there.”

What do you consider the strengths of your overall game?

“My route running and I can create separation. I am good at reading defenses.”

I got to see you perform at the Dallas Nike Regional, how did the camp go for you?

“It went okay. I feel I could have put up better numbers.”

What did you do well one-on-ones?

“I made a lot of people go in different directions. It was tough to connect with the quarterbacks out there.

What other camps have you been to this offseason?

“I went to a Rivals Three-Stripe camp.”

Do you have any other upcoming camps scheduled?

“I have a lot of camps I plan on attending. From May 30 through June 30 I will be in Texas with my 7v7 coach going to camps and going on visits.”

Which schools are showing interest in you?

“Notre Dame, SMU, Wake Forest, Columbia, Cornell, and Yale.”

Which schools have offered you so far?

“I have an offer from Colorado.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?

“Yes, sir. I have visited Nicholls State and Southeastern.”

How is everything going in the classroom?

“My GPA is a 3.14.”

Nice. Are you playing any other sports from Broadmoor?

“I run track and I may play baseball this year.”

Which events are you running in track?

“The 100, 4×1, and sometimes the 4×2.”

What is your best time in the 100?

“11.4.”

Back to football. During a game, what kind of player are you, are you a talker or do you let your play do the talking?

“It depends. If my team is not giving the effort, I start talking. Otherwise, I let my play do the talking. I’m not a big talker, even off the field.”

How is the team looking in spring ball?

“We are looking good. We look better than last year.”

Is there a college or NFL player you watch to learn more about the game?

“Yes, sir. I watch Tyreek Hill (Kansas City Chiefs), Tavon Austin (LA Rams), and Christian Kirk (Texas A&M/Arizona Cardinals).”

What do you love about playing football?

“I love how I can always relate it back to real life situations. It helps me be a better person. It helps me relieve stress. I can be in the worst mood ever, but when I am on the field I am a different person.”

Tyler, thanks for your time today and good luck with all the upcoming camps.

“Thank you.”
