JSerra Catholic High School played one of the most difficult in-state schedules possible during the 2018 season and added out of state powers in Pinnacle (AZ) and Faith Lutheran (NV) for good measure. Beyond playing the always tough Trinity League games against the likes of Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Orange Lutheran, Santa Margarita and Servite, they also collided with Calabasas and Bishop Amat in the regular season and Long Beach Poly and Oaks Christian in the playoffs. Each week was a test for the Lions needing everyone to step up their game. One of the underclassmen who rose to the occasion making a name for himself on the recruiting trail in the process was Class of 2021 corner/athlete Zamajay Duncan.

Duncan (5-10, 180) was a key factor in the Lions posting a 9-3 record with an end of season No. 17 national ranking by MaxPreps. Through playing top competition, Duncan went up against his fair share of five-, four-, and three-star rated players proving he belongs in the mix among the best in California. His sophomore campaign ended with 45 tackles, 34 solo, two tackles for a loss, two quarterback hurries, a forced fumble, six pass breakups, and two interceptions. His play earned recognition among Power 5 Conference programs with offers already on the table from Utah and Oklahoma.

In an RNG catch-up interview, I sat down with Duncan recapping his 2018 season with a look at his offseason workout program and growing recruiting process.

Interview

Zamajay, entering the offseason, what do you consider to be the strengths of your game on defense?

“My strengths, I’d say reading the quarterback. At cornerback, reading the three-step drop and everything the quarterback and receiver are doing are the main keys. Knowing what I am doing on the field makes a difference covering. With my cover skills, I am doing 7v7 with Ground Zero working on man press and zone.”

Where all might we see you on the field in 2019 in addition to corner?

“I am playing receiver next year. On defense, I am playing corner but I am moving around playing safety and some outside linebacker.”

Are you excited about all the new positions?

“Yes, sir. Absolutely. I am stepping up with the loss of all our seniors. It will be a challenge but I am ready for it.”

You mentioned working on your man and zone coverage, what else are you working on this offseason with your game?

“I am working on my speed and strength. At JSerra, we have started early. I am working on my ball skills, going to highest point to get the ball, and my route tree recognition.”

Where are you already seeing the biggest gains in your workouts?

“I’d say my eye discipline. My desire to improve… I just like being out there. My love for the game continues to grow.”

You are playing with Ground Zero, how does working out with the staff help you?

“Working with Ground Zero, they have been working on me getting my footwork properly set and getting my hands right. I am working to make sure the receiver does not get off the line and reading the QB. Those are huge improvement for me this offseason.”

You have picked up two big offers, which schools offered you?

“Utah and Oklahoma.”

That’s great. Congratulations.

“Thank you.”

With that first offer from Utah, what was it like when you found out a dream had come true?

“I was so overwhelmed, I did not think it was true. It took a minute to absorb it. It was definitely a dream come true.”

Which schools are showing interest?

“I have been talking to Washington, Arizona State, and Wisconsin.”

Are you going to get a chance to visit any schools this offseason?

“I am planning on visiting Oklahoma. That will be my first visit unofficial visit.”

That will be exciting. Back to your play on the field. Is there an area of your game you feel gets overlooked?

“Honestly, I feel this way about my game on offense. I used to be a receiver and then i transferred to corner. I am excited about what I can do on offense as a receiver. That right now is what gets overlooked in my game.”

Last question. What does Zamajay do for fun when he is not doing a football related activity?

“I hang out with friends, spend time with my family, and listen to music.”

Zamajay, it was great catching up with you today. I wish you success with your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
