Each high school football season the nation produces breakout stars that capture the fans and college coaches’ imagination alike. When the 2018 season had ended, an unlikely star arose from the gridiron at Bishop Alemany. Not unlikely because of talent, but because he was a freshman. Class of 2022 receiver Kevin Green Jr. took to the field like a grizzled veteran at the varsity level racing past California Division-II secondaries for 854 yards off 77 receptions with six touchdowns. The production on the field helped Alemany to a 7-5 record and pushed Green into Freshman All-American status with MaxPreps. The attention for the 5-10, 150-pound, rising star did not stop there, five programs have offered Green ahead of his sophomore season; Arizona State, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State, and Tennessee.

The Warriors are already two games into their 2019 season with a 2-0 record after a 62-36 home win over a visiting Jordan (UT) squad and a 55-16 road win in Arizona over Higley. To start the season, Green already has 11 passes pulled in for 161 yards with two trips into the end zone. For an update on his play on the field and the Warriors hot start, I sat down for a one-on-one with Green.

Interview

Kevin, you absolutely tore it up during your freshman season with the Warriors. What was working so well for you last season allowing you to tear apart defenses?

“My QB was putting it on the spot.”

What did you work on with your game this offseason?

“I have been working on my speed and strength. I have also been working on my hands, my routes, and my timing with my QB (Miller Moss).”

Did you play 7v7 with a travel team this spring?

“Yes. I played with Formula 4 Speed.”

How did playing with Formula 4 Speed help take your game to another level?

“It helped me work on my releases, my routes, and going up against top competition made me better.”

Where are you seeing the differences in your game from last year to this season?

“My game has improved with my explosiveness, my  routes are way better, and my hands are better.”

How are you used within the Warriors offense?

“I play outside receiver. I am always at the numbers.”

What is one of your favorite routes to run?

“The stop route is one of my favorites.”

Are you taking on any new roles this season?

“Playing outside receiver is a new role for me, I was playing slot last season. They moved me right before our first game.”

The Warriors got a very early start to the season taking on Utah’s Jordan High School (62-36) on the 16th and then traveled last week to Arizona’s Higley (55-16). The offense looks like it is midseason form. What is clicking for you guys already this season?

“My team – we all go out and give it all we got. We play for each other.”

With the team on a bye week now, what are some of the things you will work on ahead of the Dorsey showdown?

“Our tempo on offense. We have got to work on that. On defense, we will work to tighten up against the run.”

There are some big games left on the schedule, which contests are you hyped to play this year?

“Oaks Christian; I didn’t like how it worked out last year. Bishop Amat is another one, we lost at the last second against them. Notre Dame, they got us as well last season.”

After your big freshman season, how many offers do you have now?

“I have five offers.”

Did you visit any schools this offseason?

“Yes. I visited Oregon.”

How did that visit go?

“It went well. It was on my brother’s official. I liked it. All the coaches are really cool at Oregon. I like their facilities.”

Kevin, thanks for your time today and good luck this season.

“Thank you.”
