Some players talk about wanting to be great while others go out and prepare to make greatness happen on the field. The offseason for Jonathan Brady has been about actions, not words, ready to make his mark with national powerhouse high school football program Bishop Gorman during the 2020 season. The 5-11, 166-pound, receiver got a taste of 4A Nevada competition a year ago and is now prepared for a full season of leaving defenders in the dust with PA announcers calling out his name repeatedly.

In an RNG catch-up interview, Brady goes over his intense workouts this spring with a singular focus on his junior campaign.

Interview

Jonathan, I got to see you burn some defensive backs back in January during a workout in Los Angeles. Since then, what have you been working on with your skills as a receiver?

“Since then I have been working on everything to improve my game. I have been working on separation, getting in and out of breaks, my releases, and my speed off the ball. Even though I may have a decent day, you can never settle. I have been working to get better in every way possible.”

Sounds like it. Where are you seeing the technical improvements in your craft?

“I am seeing improvements in every part of my game. I have been going against some of the top guys here in Vegas, which is helping me see what I need to work on. I know I have improved my separation, selling my routes, and my game overall – everything a receiver needs to get open. This summer I am still working on my hands and catching the ball in traffic.”

How have you worked to increase your speed and agility over the spring months?

“I have a little weight room at my house and a treadmill, I jump rope a lot and I have a trainer. We work out at a facility doing box jumps, squat jumps, and the treadmill – a Woodway. He makes us get to top end speed, and track for time. He also gets us to the park running with sleds; he is helping get my speed and explosiveness up.”

Let’s go deeper on this topic; what is your daily workout routine?

“Every day I have two workouts, two different workouts. Today I have a weight room session at 2:00 and I ran in the morning at 7:00. I either run or lift first, and consist of both running and lifting each day. I have put in a lot of work and improved on all my lifts. I said I wanted to be great, but I wasn’t putting in the work. Now I have changed my mindset and grown in all areas. I am putting the work in now.”

Once the 2020 season gets going, how will your skills be utilized within the Gaels’ offense?

“In our offense, I will be one on one with defensive back a lot running posts, streaks, and comebacks. It is on me to get open. I will be on a side by myself. If I don’t get open, it is on me. There will not be a linebacker there on the inside to stop me. This season will show me if I worked hard enough this offseason.”

Some camps are starting to pop up, are there any upcoming camps you may attend?

“Before the quarantine I wanted to go to every camp to showcase my skills possible. I will try to go to any camps I can but it will be tough being focused on the team. I want to win this year with my brothers. Going to camps will all depend on practice.”

Understood. This offseason did you get a chance to take any unofficial visits?

“Yes, I went with Premium, my 7v7 team. We went on two visits, Washington and Oregon.”

How did the Washington visit go? What did you do and see?

“We saw everything. We walked through the weight room, locker room, study hall, onto the field, and went into the team meeting room. It was a fun experience.”

And the Oregon visit?

“We went through weight room and locker room. At Oregon they had a room with all their old helmets and gear, that was cool to see. Growing up, seeing those uniforms watching them play on TV, that was cool. It was great trying on the uniforms. Both Washington and Oregon showed a lot of hospitality to us.”

There is essentially two months left before the 2020 season begins. What summer goals have you set before Week 1?

“I want to get my body weight to 170. I have been improving overall, getting bigger, faster, and stronger, but I am not satisfied, I want to keep going. I want to increase my football IQ, read defenses pre-snap, and do anything I can to increase my chances of being great on the field this year.”

Jonathan, I enjoyed catching up with you today and I am excited to see how the 2020 season goes for you. Keep up the hard work.

“Thank you.”
