If one did not know any better, after seeing Ian Box on the gridiron against 5A Texas squads on Friday nights a person would think he’s been caged for a week. The 6-3, 235-pound, defensive end hits the field with a bundle of pent-up strength and energy enforcing his will on opposing offenses. Even with offenses redirecting their efforts the other way, in five games this season with Sequin High School Box has put an end to 26 plays, 18 solo, with eight tackles for a loss, and 5.5 sacks. The efforts are catching next level eyes with UTSA and Columbia showing interest in the Class of 2022 prospect.

With the Matadors sitting on a 4-2 record ready to face Johnson with the playoffs looming, Box stopped by the RNG Lab covering ground on his 2020 season.

Interview

Ian, as edge rushers go you do a great job of using your speed and strength to get into the backfield, especially on passing downs. With 5A Texas offenses knowing what you can do, how are teams trying to stop you this season?

My coaches tell me offenses tend to read me instead of blocking me that and they are rolling out the other way. I am getting a lot of double and triple teams, seeing teams do quick passes, and running the other way.

What scheme are the Matadors running this season?

We are running 4-2 with two backers.

Besides rushing the passer, what are your responsibilities within the defense?

A lot of my key jobs, we call it filling, are taking on the pulling guard and tackle and holding my gap.

Which moves are you employing this season?

We do a lot of pass-pro practice at school with the offensive linemen. I am trying to learn new moves and see what works. I like the jump-swipe move, I like spin moves, bull rushes and I like using my speed most of the time.

Of the games played, which one has been your personal best?

Our game against Veterans Memorial (San Antonio).

Why did you pick that one?

I had a good week of practice, which is why I played the way I did. I had four sacks, eight tackles, and some tackles for a loss.

Where are you seeing the biggest overall improvements in your skills this season?

In the weight room. I was in the weight room three times a day in the offseason. My diet has made a difference. I put on 30-plus pounds. Being stronger and, usually, faster than the offensive players is a game changer.

Last time on the field the Matadors got a big 68-7 win over McCollum (San Antonio). How is the team looking heading into Friday’s game against Johnson (5-1)?

We are confident but we know what they can do. We are ready to go, but we are not going get too high. Against Johnson, we will go out and play like we know we can.

What kind of game are you looking at against the Jaguars on Friday?

From our practices, I know they do pass a lot. My goal is to wreak havoc against them. That is all I want to do. I want to go out there and ball out.

Ian, it was great getting time with you talking about you and the Matadors season. Wishing you guys success against the Jags Friday night.

Thank you, sir.
