Any high school athlete that has applied their trade on the field and in the classroom only needs that one scholarship offer to see their dreams fulfilled, anything above and beyond is proverbial gravy. After being a key defender on a 2017 national championship winning Mater Dei squad, focus is setting in on repeating for Class of 2019 strong safety William Nimmo aided by wrapping up the recruiting process ahead of the 2018 season.

Through a 15-0 season to remember, the Monarchs lined up against some of the best teams in the nation enforcing their will game after game and play after play. The defense was a rabid beast limiting the top competition to just 15 points per contest on average. Holding the fort as the last line of defense was Nimmo. The 6-1, 195-pound, athlete accumulated 28 tackles, 26 solo, three tackles for a loss, and broke up five passes during his junior season.

The tough play on the field has led to five early offers ahead of the spring evaluation period. Florida, Boston College, Montana State, Nevada, and UNLV are the early birds dropping an offer on the table for Nimmo, with more sure to follow. Those showing interest may want to step up their game, Nimmo is zeroing in on an announcement date sooner than later.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the three-star recruit covering his play on the field, offseason workouts, and recruiting process to date.

Interview

William, how did your game develop last season?

“Last year, I was down in the box helping in run support a lot. Playing strong safety, I was taking on big running backs and covered tight ends. My game developed as a tackler last season, especially in the open field. I came up big in run support.”

What do you consider the strengths of your game?

“Besides tackling, I’d say man coverage. A lot of safeties cannot cover. I can guard big tight ends – that is not a problem for me. In run support, I do not miss tackles. I am consistent with my tackles. You can see that on my highlight reel.”

What are you working on this offseason?

“I am working on quicker feet, getting bigger, and I want to be 200 pounds by the time the season starts to get ready for the college game.”

Are you playing 7v7 ball this spring?

“I am. I am playing with Ground Zero and BSN this weekend. BSN, that is Mater Dei’s 7v7 team.”

How is 7v7 helping you push your game forward?

“With Ground Zero, we are in man coverage all the time. That helps me hone my skills every time out.”

I saw you at the Nike Opening Regional in LA, what other camps have competed at this spring?

“The Opening, Rivals, I was invited but I was not able to go to the Under Armour All-American camp. We were in Vegas for a 7v7 Pylon Tournament.”

How did the Opening go for you?

“It was pretty good. I ran a 4.59.”

That is good. All the times were slow on the turf there. Do you have other camps you might attend this spring or summer?

“Coming up, I plan on attending the USC Rising Stars this summer and I am going to a Florida (Gators) camp. They have offered me. I want to camp there and visit the school.”

Nice transition into recruiting. How many offers do you have now?

“I have five offers.”

Which schools are showing interest in you but have not offered yet?

“Oregon, Oregon State, Iowa State, Cal, Colorado, and Washington State are showing interest.”

You mentioned the Florida visit, do you have any other visits planned?

“Besides Florida this summer, I have Oregon and Cal in April so far. I want to start visiting some schools so I can make my commitment decision late summertime – sometime in August.”

What is your cumulative GPA?

“I have a 3.8.”

Have you taken the ACT and/or SAT yet?

“I have taken the SAT. I scored a 1090 on the SAT.”

Nice. Couple of last questions getting back to football. Which game was your best last season?

“The Mission Viejo game was my best.”

What did you do well against Mission Viejo?

“I came down in run support. They were running routes across the middle – I locked that down. They were running a lot of digs. I was everywhere in that game.”

What goals have you set for the offseason?

“Going to these camps – I am proud of my skillset. I want to present that to college coaches. I want to go out there and show them.”

William, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
