Class of 2019 running back Jamari Ferrell (5-8, 190) is having an explosive season and doing it on a grand stage. The workhorse tailback has raced out to 563 yards on the ground off 113 totes with seven scores and has hauled in 15 passes for 104 yards to help Mission Viejo to a 6-0 start with a No. 17 national MaxPreps ranking. The big production is drawing new recruiting interest and has the Diablos as a team to be feared once the playoffs begin.

In a Recruiting News Guru mid-season catch-up interview, I caught up with the overlooked three-star ranked talent for an update his improving skillset and recruiting prospects.

Interview

Jamari, the Diablos are at it again off to another great season. What all is working well for you guys on offense?

“Almost everything is working in our offense so far. Coach Johnson has inputted and outputted a lot of plays as the weeks go by in the season but whatever he game plans I 100 percent trust in it.”

You guys have played some very tough teams already this year, which game was the most challenging for you but made you better in the long run?

“The toughest team that has made me better had to be Upland. I didn’t rush for very many yards, but it was a great challenge especially playing against such a tough defense with Justin Flowe (linebacker).”

I can’t imagine how excited you guys were in the locker room after taking down Upland and Orange Lutheran in back-to-back games. What was the atmosphere in there afterwards?

“That atmosphere was electric after both games and we all knew we earned it after a great week of practice and preparation for both games.”

How did the OLU game go for you?

“The OLU game went really well for me, I had two touchdowns and rushed for 173 yards.”

Where are you seeing the biggest improvement in your game this year?

“The season started off really slow for me improvement wise but once we got through a couple games I picked it up. I am seeing big improvement in my cutting and breaking tackles.”

This may seem like a silly question, and you guys may end up ranked higher by season’s end, but for now how does it feel to be the leading rusher on the No. 17 ranked team in the country?

“I’m honestly blessed but I got to give it all to my teammates. My offensive line has improved greatly from the first game and the wide receivers and quarterback are helping me with routes, moves, and blocking.”

You are a workhorse for the Diablos averaging 19 carries per game, how are you taking care of your body week to week to prepare for the next game?

“We prepare the same way for every team and we never want to doubt anyone especially a crosstown rival.”

You guys get El Toro on Friday, what kind of game are you guys expecting from them?

“We’re expecting a hard fight from them and nothing less.”

Which schools are showing interest in you but have not offered yet?

“Eastern Washington and Utah are showing interest.”

Do you have any planned visits upcoming?

“I am taking an unofficial to Eastern Washington soon.”

How is everything going in the classroom?

“I have a 3.0 GPA.”

Jamari, thanks for your time today and good luck against El Toro.

“Thank you.”
